THE LITTLE HOURS OF THE DAY

ACCORDING TO THE

Calendar of the Church of England.

At Prime on Sundays.

Our Father. Hail, Mary. I believe. . O God, make speed to save me. R. O Lord, make haste to help me. . Glory. Ry. As it was. Alleluia. Or from Septuagesima to Maundy Thursday shall be said, Praise be to Thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory.

HYMN. Jam lucis orto sidere.
Now that the daylight fills the sky,
We lift our hearts to God on high,
That He, in all we do or say,

Would keep us free from harm to-day:
Would guard our hearts and tongues from

strife:

From anger's din would hide our life:
From all ill sights would turn our eyes:
Would close our ears from vanities:
Would keep our inmost conscience pure:
Our souls from folly would secure :
Would bid us check the pride of sense
With due and holy abstinence.
So we, when this new day is gone,
And night in turn is drawing on,

With conscience by the world unstained,
Shall praise His Name for victory gained.
All laud to God the Father be;

All laud, Eternal Son, to Thee;
All laud, as is for ever meet,
To God the Holy Paraclete. Amen.

On Sundays throughout the year, and in Easter-tide, ANT. Alleluia. PSALM LIV. Deus, in nomine. SAVE me, O God, for Thy Name's sake and avenge me in Thy strength.

Hear my prayer, O God: and hearken unto the words of my mouth.

For strangers are risen up against me and tyrants, which have not God before their eyes, seek after my soul.

Behold, God is my helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.

He shall reward evil unto mine enemies destroy Thou them in Thy truth.

An offering of a free heart will I give Thee, and praise Thy Name, O Lord: because it is so comfortable.

For He hath delivered me out of all my trouble and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

The following Psalm, Confitemini Domino, shall be said only on Sundays, when the Office is of the Sunday, except on Sundays from Easter to Whitsun Day, and from Septuagesima to Easter, when the Psalm Dominus regnavit (xciii.) shall be said. PSALM CXVIII. Confitemini Domino. GIVE thanks unto the Lord, for 0 He is gracious: because His mercy endureth for ever.

Let Israel now confess that He is

gracious: and that His mercy endureth

for ever.

Let the house of Aaron now confess : that His mercy endureth for ever.

Yea, let them now that fear the Lord confess that His mercy endureth for ever.

I called upon the Lord in trouble : and the Lord heard me at large.

thorns for in the Name of the Lord I will destroy them.

Thou hast thrust sore at me, that I might fall but the Lord was my help. The Lord is my strength, and my song: and is become my salvation.

The voice of joy and health is in the dwellings of the righteous: the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass.

The right hand of the Lord hath the pre-eminence the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass.

:

I shall not die, but live: and declare the works of the Lord.

The Lord hath chastened and corrected me but He hath not given me over unto death.

Open me the gates of righteousness: that I may go into them, and give

thanks unto the Lord.

This is the gate of the Lord the righteous shall enter into it.

I will thank Thee, for Thou hast heard me: and art become my salvation. The same stone which the builders refused is become the head-stone in the corner.

:

This is the Lord's doing and it is marvellous in our eyes.

This is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it. Help me now, O Lord : O Lord, send us now prosperity.

Blessed be he that cometh in the Name of the Lord we have wished you good luck, ye that are of the house of the Lord.

God is the Lord who hath showed us light bind the sacrifice with cords, yea, even unto the horns of the altar.

Thou art my God, and I will thank Thee: Thou art my God, and I will praise Thee.

O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is gracious and His mercy endureth for ever.

From Septuagesima to Easter shall be said,

PSALM XCIII. Dominus regnavit. THE Lord is King, and hath put on glorious apparel: the Lord hath put on His apparel, and girded Himself with strength.

He hath made the round world so sure that it cannot be moved.

Ever since the world began hath Thy seat been prepared : Thou art from everlasting.

The floods are risen, O Lord, the floods have lift up their voice floods lift up their waves.

:

the

The waves of the sea are mighty, and rage horribly but yet the Lord, Who dwelleth on high, is mightier. Thy testimonies, O Lord, are very holiness becometh Thine house

DO well unto Thy servant: that I may live, and keep Thy word. Open Thou mine eyes: that I may see the wondrous things of Thy law. I am a stranger upon earth: O hide not Thy commandments from me.

My soul breaketh out for the very fervent desire: that it hath alway unto Thy judgments.

Thou hast rebuked the proud and cursed are they that do err from Thy commandments.

O turn from me shame and rebuke: for I have kept Thy testimonies.

Princes also did sit and speak against me but Thy servant is occupied in Thy statutes.

For Thy testimonies are my delight: and my counsellors.

My soul cleaveth to the dust: O quicken Thou me, according to Thy word.

I have acknowledged my ways, and Thou heardest me : O teach me Thy statutes.

Make me to understand the way of Thy commandments: and so shall I talk of Thy wondrous works.

My soul melteth away for very heaviness comfort Thou me according unto Thy word.

Take from me the way of lying: and cause Thou me to make much of Thy law. I have chosen the way of truth: and Thy judgments have I laid before me. I have stuck unto Thy testimonies : O Lord, confound me not.

I will run the way of Thy commandments when Thou hast set my heart at liberty.

The Creed following shall be said on
Sundays only, when the Office is of
the Sunday, and on the Feast of the
Holy Trinity.

THE CREED OF ST. ATHANASIUS.
Quicunque vult.

WHOSOEVER will be saved: before all things it is necessary that

he hold the Catholic Faith.

Which Faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled: without doubt he shall perish everlastingly.

And the Catholic Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity;

Neither confounding the Persons : nor dividing the Substance.

For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son and another of the Holy Ghost.

:

But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one the glory equal, the majesty co-eternal.

Such as the Father is, such is the Son: and such is the Holy Ghost.

The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate and the Holy Ghost uncreate. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible.

:

The Father eternal, the Son eternal: and the Holy Ghost eternal.

And yet they are not three eternals: but one eternal.

As also there are not three incompre

"

hensibles, nor three uncreated: but one | Man, of the substance of His Mother, uncreated, and one incomprehensible. born in the world; So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty: and the Holy Ghost almighty.

And yet they are not three Almighties but one Almighty.

:

:

So the Father is God, the Son is God and the Holy Ghost is God; And yet they are not three Gods: but one God.

[blocks in formation]

The Father is made of none: neither created, nor begotten.

The Son is of the Father alone: not made, nor created, but begotten.

The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son : neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.

So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons: one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts.

And in this Trinity none is afore, or after other none is greater, or less than another;

But the whole three Persons are coeternal together and co-equal.

:

So that in all things, as is aforesaid: the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped.

He therefore that will be saved : must thus think of the Trinity.

Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man;

Perfect God, and perfect Man : of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting;

Equal to the Father, as touching His Godhead and inferior to the Father, as touching His Manhood.

Who although He be God and Man: yet He is not two, but one Christ;

One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh but by taking of the Manhood into God;

[ocr errors]

One altogether; not by confusion of substance but by unity of person.

:

For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man: so God and Man is one Christ;

Who suffered for our salvation : descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead.

He ascended into heaven, He sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God almighty: from whence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

At Whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies: and shall give account for their own works.

And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting: and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.

This is the Catholic Faith: which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

ANT. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. In Easter-tide shall be added another Alleluia.

THE LITTLE CHAPTER. 1 Tim. i. 17. To the King eternal, immortal, in

visible, the only wise God, be honour, and glory for ever and ever. Amen. Ry. Thanks be to God.

SHORT R. O Christ, Son of the liv

God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds: and ing God,* Have mercy upon us. Then
