As most of the irregularities among common words have been already presented to the child, and as he will now have acquired considerable fluency in easy reading, along with some appreciation of the matter read, a varied selection has been made from authors that have long been favourites with the young. In addition to these selections, many pieces, in prose and verse, have been written expressly for the present series. Fiction has been largely drawn upon, both to cultivate the imagination and the sense of humour, and to inculcate morality through the time-honoured medium of the fable.
