PREFACE.

IN offering a new collection of the Songs of Yale College to its students, alumni, and the public, the compilers present several important reasons for its existence.

The books of this character already in print, were issued so long ago that they contain many songs now entirely out of use in the college, while very many later ones have become so familiar that they are now a part of college life, and should be within the reach of those who admire and enjoy college singing.

It has been the purpose in this book to present every song arranged expressly for male voices, and in an available form for any gentlemens' singing club. In most cases, the melody is given to the Second Tenor, in conformity with the custom adopted by the students. The changes in the manner of singing many of the old songs, which have crept in during the past fifteen years, have been adopted, and each song now appears in the form in which it is at present used. In many instances, new words have been applied to old songs by the students, and care has been taken to include them. It is believed that nothing has been omitted which to-day has a place of any importance in Yale singing, and by reducing all the pieces to scores of two lines each, it has been possible to embrace a much larger number in a volume of convenient size.

It is hoped that the present volume will prove of value in supplying to the alumni and members of the college, the songs which have become identified with their college course, in stimulating college singing and the production of still other new songs, and in adding to the musical reputation of Yale.
