"It is not easy for any one to keep up a constant succession of such things, and a slight suspicion of selfcopying may be detected here and there.' Andocides. De mysteriis, and De reditu; ed. by E. C. Marchant.

"By preparing a students' edition of the two most interesting speeches of Andocides, Mr. Marchant has supplied an obvious want. The book supplies abundant evidence of sound scholarship and independent work and thought. It would be difficult to speak too highly of Mr. Marchant's commentary, or of the whole volume." — Athenæum, Feb. 8.

Coupland, W: C. The gain of life, and other es

says.

"Dr. Coupland does well to take up the subject, and to treat it as he has done in a manner at once thoughtful and popular. His previous works, more especially his eminently philosophical study of Goethe's Faust,' and his translation of Von Hartmann's opus magnum, would lead one to expect that he has long brooded on the problem of existence, and his new work confirms the expectation. It shows plainly that he has well grounded himself by careful reading in the learning of the subject, and at the same time it proves that he has lived, and gathered the practical wisdom that comes from moving among men and observing their ways. The style of the work answers very well to this semi-philo. sophic, semi-popular treatment. It has for the greater part the severity and the self-control of the thinker, while in places it takes on colour and warmth, and rises to a pitch of genuine eloquence." Saturday rev., Aug. 2.

Fitch, J. G. Notes on American schools and training colleges; repr. from the report of the English education dept., 1888-89.

"A most valuable addition to the list of his contributions to the history of modern education; and it will certainly be recognised as an authoritative record of an interesting, if chaotic, state of things in countries working out for themselves the right method of teaching and training. The fact that Dr. Fitch himself has had so much to do with creating educational tradition in England does not prevent him from frankly pointing out where our relatives have surpassed the record made by our. selves. We rise from the reading of his book with the conviction that we are, after all, a good deal better than we thought. Taking the whole subject of educationlower, middle, and higher as a system, we still have the better of it, though how long that may be it would be rash to prophecy."— Academy, Sept. 6.

Scholars, I think, will regret that so admirable a plot should have been treated so slightly by Dr. Gar. nett, who has given us rather one prolonged scene than a drama, and has not ventured to reproduce the choice element of Greek tragedy. Hosie, A. Three years in western China; a narrative of three journeys; with introd. by A. Little.

...

"It is of comparatively late years that we have be come aware of the immense wealth which is hoarded in this portion of the Celestial Empire. The travels of Sladen, Cooper, Margary, Gill, Baber, and Hosie have revealed the fact that behind the mountain barriers which separate Eastern from Western China there lies a territory of boundless wealth, and immense capabili ties of development. Russia has striven to reach it from the north, France has succeeded in opening a trad ing route into it from Tonquin, and we have talked a great deal of opening communication between Burma and Yunnan. The routes Mr. Hosie chose were not always those taken by his predecessors, and he gives his experiences by the way with great zest." Athenæum, Aug. 16. Inagaki, M. King, A. F. The clerical cracksman; a tale for the burgling season.

Kipling, R. The story of the Gadsbys; a tale without a plot.

"He adopts in it a quasi-dramatic method, and though the various scenes into which the action is divided are cleverly enough sketched, the work as a whole somehow seems rugged and unsatisfactory. As it stands it certainly could not be put upon the stage as a play; and considered as a novel it is, owing to its scrappiness, woefully difficult to read. The story affords abundant opportunities for the display both of the virtues and defects of Mr. Kipling's literary method. The former are conspicuous in the humorous pictures of the captain's ridiculous qualms on the morning of his wedding day, and the equally pathetic description of the poor little wife's illness." - Athenæum, July 5. Lang, A. Oxford; brief historical and descriptive notes. New ed.

"Mr. Andrew Lang is precisely the person who ought to write a small book of this kind on Oxford. His light touch and singular facility for seizing salient points, putting them in picturesque and easy prominence, and his antiquarian proclivities tempered by humour, in which the Dryasdust duiness usual in antiquarians is displaced by a half-cynical playfulness, make him an admirable compiler of a sketch of Oxford. His graceful style is well seconded by equally graceful illustrations."-Spectator, Apr. 19.

Unfortunataly the literary part of the work is by no means on the same high level as the artistic." Athenæum, Aug. 9.

American by adoption, Mrs. B. MacGahan is Russian by birth, and has had opportunity to study in real life all that she describes. For his mind is essentially modern; and, however well he might get up such a subject as Akbar. he would never perhaps find himself in harmony with the medieval ruler.

The author has applied to an oriental barbarian of the sixteenth century the ideas that arose long afterwards in a totally different condition of the human mind. That is the false note throughout.
