Singing a song of the cinnamon tree : Thou art the Paradise Bird of the west. Leprosy. (Concluded.) HE king of Israel read the letter, and knowing full well that he could not cure the disease, rent his garments in token of sorrow and despair, and exclaimed: "Am I God, to be able to kill and give life, that tl is man hath sent to me to heal a man of his leprosy?" Then the suspicion arose Then the suspicion arose in his mind, that this was but a pretext of the Syrian king to provoke a quarrel: "Mark, and see how he seeketh occasions against me." "And when Eliseus, the man of God, heard this, to wit, that the king of Israel had rent his garments, he sent to him, saying: Why hast thou rent thy garments? Let him come to me, and let him know that there is a prophet in Israel." Naaman came, therefore, with his chariot and horses, and stopped at the door of the house of Eliseus, either out of respect for him, or that, having the leprosy, he was impure. The prophet sent a messenger to tell him that he should wash himself seven times in the River Jordan. Naaman being very angry at this mode of cure, and at the prophet's apparent stiffness, was turning away in great wrath, when his servants told him to do whatever the prophet commanded, assuring him that thereby he would be cured. Naaman, being persuaded, went to the Jordan, washed seven times and was perfectly cured. He wished to reward the prophet, but the man of God would take nothing. He also assured Eliseus that he would No. 5. thenceforth offer holocausts to no other but the God of Israel. "But Giezi, the servant of the man of God, said: My master hath spared Naaman, this Syrian, in not receiving of him that which he brought as the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take something of him. And Giezi followed after Naaman: and when he saw him running after him, he leaped down from his chariot to meet him and said: Is all well? And he said: All is well, my master hath sent me to thee, saying: Just now there are come to me from Mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them a talent of silver, and two changes of garments." But Naaman insisted on Giezi taking two talents and two changes, which two of his own servants carried to the prophet. "And when he was come, and now it was the evening, he took them from their hands, and laid them up in the house, and sent the men away, and they departed; but he went in and stood before his master. And Eliseus said: Whence comest thou, Giezi? He answered: Thy servant went no whither. But he said: Was not my heart present when the man turned back from his chariot to meet thee? So now thou hast received money, and received garments, to buy oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and men-servants, and maid-servants. But the leprosy of Naaman shall stick to thee and to thy seed forever. And he went out from him a leper as white as snow."-4 Kings, 5. Many opinions have been advanced in endeavors to bring to light the distinctive form of Job's disease. Some commentators say that Job was afflicted with small-pox, while others maintain that he himself describes the symptoms and marks of elephantiasis. A study of the book of Job convinces us that the latter are more correct in their opinions. "So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with a grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head. And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dung-hill."-Job, 2-2: 7, 8. Satan, with God's permission, had, before this, tested the patience of Job in every way, and now, by thus afflicting him, he wished to see his courage and hope in God fail, but all to no purpose. Job feelingly complains of his sufferings in several parts of his book. Elephantiasis is a terrible disease, sufficient to try the patience of any man, and Satan evidently showed his sagacity and malice when he selected this disease as the most likely means to provoke Job to impatience. Let us next attend to the hints given in the book of Job, ch. 2: 7, 8. We are told that "Satan struck Job with a grievous ulcer from the sole of his foot even to the top of his head." This is evidently descriptive of elephantiasis in its most active and rapid |
