This is The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 1, the first in a four-volume set. It deals with the period of Biblical history of the patriarchs and the early monarchy in Israel under David and Solomon. It has significant insights into the cause of sin and suffering in the world, in other words, theodicy. It was superseded by the author's revised book, Patriarchs and Prophets (1890).
