We have such an High Priest, who | Therefore God, even thy God, hath is set on the right hand of the throne anointed thee with the oil, &c.-Ps. of the Majesty in the heavens.-Heb. xlv. 5-7; Heb. i. 8. viii. 1.

But Christ being come an High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, &c. By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, &c. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, &c. but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.-Heb. ix. 11, 12. 24; Eph. iv. 8.

After he had offered one sacrifice, &c. sat down on the right hand of God, &c. Having, therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he had consecrated (or new made) for us, &c. let us draw near, &c.-Heb. x. 12. 19-22.

Ye are come to the heavenly Jerusalem, &c. and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, which speaketh better things than that of Abel.-Heb. xii. 22. 24.

Christ hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, &c. Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God.-1 Pet. iii. 18. 22.

If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.-1 John ii. 1.

SECT. 9.-He is made our King and Head, to encounter and conquer our Enemies, to rule for us, and in us. THERE shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel. -Numb. xxiv. 17; Gen. xlix. 10.

Yet have I set my King (or mine Anointed) upon my holy hill of Sion. I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, &c.-Ps. ii. 6. 8.

Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies, whereby the people fall under thee. Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre, &c.

Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive, thou hast received gifts for men.-Ps. lxviii. 18; Isa. liii. 12.

He shall judge, &c. He shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.-Ps. lxxii. 2. 4. 12—14.

Unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, &c. Of the increase of his government shall be no end; upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, &c.-Isa. ix. 6, 7; xxxii. 1; xi. 1, &c.; Iv. 4.

The days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, &c. in his days shall Judah be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely.-Jer. xxiii. 5, 6; xxxiii. 17; Zech. vi. 12, 13.

I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them; even my servant David, &c. I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them.-Ezek. xxxiv. 23, 24.

The Messiah, the Prince.- Dan. ix. 25.

Thou, Bethlehem, &c. out of thee shall he come forth unto me, that is to be ruler in Israel.-Micah v. 2.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, &c. Behold, &c.-Zech. ix. 9.

Jesus; he shall be great, &c. And the Lord shall give him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign, &c. for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.-Luke i. 31–33.

When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour, &c.-Luke xi. 21, 22.

We will not have this man to reign over us, &c. Those, mine enemies, &c. bring hither, and slay them, &c. -Luke xix. 14. 27.

When he is come, he will reprove the world, &c. of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged, &c. Be of good cheer, 1 have overcome the world, &c.-John xvi. 8. 11. 33. God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Acts ii. 36; Ps. cx. 1-3; Luke xx. 42, 43.

Him hath God exalted with his right hand, to be a Prince, and a Saviour, &c.-Acts v. 31.

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? &c. Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus. -1 Cor. xv. 55-57.

Christ, &c. when he (God) set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, &c. And hath put all things under his feet, and given him to be the head over all things to the church.-Eph. i. 20-22. Grow up in him in all things, who is the head, even Christ, &c.-Eph.

iv. 15.

Christ is the head of the church, and Saviour of the body.-Eph. v. 23. He is the head of the body, the church, &c. that in all things he might have the pre-eminence. Col. i. 18; John xiii. 13.

He blotted out the hand-writing of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us; and took it out of the way, &c. and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it, (or in himself.)-Col. ii. 14, 15.

It became him, &c. in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the Captain of their salvation perfect, &c. He also himself likewise took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil: and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. -Heb. ii. 10. 14, 15.

expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.-Heb. x. 12, 13.

There is one lawgiver who is able to save, and to destroy.-James iv. 12. Even as I also overcame, and am sat down with my Father in his throne. -Rev. iii. 21.

These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them; for he is the Lord of lords, and King of kings.-Rev. xvii. 14.

SECT. 10.-He is our great Prophet and Shepherd, to teach, guide, and feed us.

THE Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken, &c. And the Lord said, They have well spoken, &c. I will raise them up a prophet, &c. and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him and it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.-Deut. xviii. 15-19; Acts iii. 22, 23; vii. 37.

I will declare thy name unto my brethren.-Ps. xxii. 22.

I have preached righteousness in the great congregation, &c. I have declared thy faithfulness, and thy salvation, &c.-Ps. xl. 9, 10.

Thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellions also. Ixviii. 18.

Unto us a Son is given, &c. his name shall be called Wonderful, Coun

sellor. Isa. ix. 6.

Behold, the Lord God will come, &c. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.-Isa. xl. 10, 11.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judg ment unto truth, &c. The isles shall But this man, &c. sat down on the wait for his law. I the Lord give right hand of God; from henceforth | thee, &c. a light of the Gentiles, to

Behold, I have given him, &c. a leader, and a commander unto the people.-Isa. lv. 4.

The Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek, &c. to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, &c. To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, &c. Isa. lxi. 1-3.

I will feed them in a good pasture, and they shall lie in a good fold: and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel. I will feed my flock, and will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God; I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away: I will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick, &c. And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them; even my servant David, he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.-Ezek. xxxiv. 14–16. 23; Luke xix. 10.

Out of thee shall come a governor (or captain) that shall rule (or feed) my people.-Matt. ii. 6.

All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him, &c. Learn of me.-Matt. xi. 27. 29; Luke x. 22, 23.

The dayspring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet in the way of peace.-Luke i. 78, 79; ii. 32.

I will give you a mouth, and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay, nor resist.Luke xxi. 15; Matt. x. 19, 20.

Jesus, beginning at Moses and all the prophets, expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. Luke xxiv. 26, 27. 45; Acts xvi. 14.

I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life, &c. If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, &c.—Johu viii. 12. 31, 32.

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep, &c. I know my sheep, &c. Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.— John x. 11, 12. 14. 16.

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world, &c. I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me, and they have received them, &c. While I was with them in the world, I kept them, &c. I have given them thy word, &c. I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it.-John xvii. 6. 8. 12. 14. 26; | i. 18.

To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth: every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.-John xviii. 37.

God, who, &c. spake in times past to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, &c. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, &c.Heb. i. 1, 2; ii. 1.

Wherefore, &c. consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession Christ Jesus, who was faithful to him that appointed him; as also Moses was faithful in all his house, &c. Christ as a Son over his own house; whose house are we, &c. Wherefore, &c. to-day if ye will hear

his voice, harden not your hearts.- which the builders counted for noHeb. iii. 1-3. 5-8.

As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me (or severed from me) ye can do nothing.-John xv. 4, 5.

It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace; in the world ye shall have tribulation.-John xvi. 7. 33.

Jesus Christ, &c. He is that stone

Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ, &c. All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos, &c. all are yours, and ye are Christ's.-1 Cor. iii. 11. 21-23.

The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law: but thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.— 1 Cor. xv. 56, 57.

All the promises of God in him are Yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God.-2 Cor. i. 20.

He became poor, that ye, through his poverty, might be rich.-2 Cor. viii. 9.

I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.-Gal. ii. 20.

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, &c. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus: and if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.-Gal. iii. 14. 28, 29.

Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places (or things) in Christ, &c. Chosen us in him, &c. predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ, &c. he hath made us accepted in the beloved, &c. that he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth, even in him, &c. that filleth all in all.-Eph. i. 3-6. 10. 23.

Hath quickened us together with Christ, &c. and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places, in Christ Jesus; Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone, in whom all the building, fitly framed together, groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord, in whom ye are builded together for an habitation of God, &c.-Eph. ii. 5, 6. 20—22.

That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ, &c. The unsearchable riches of Christ. Eph. iii. 6. 8.

Grow up into him in all things, who is the head, Christ: from whom the whole body is fitly joined together.-Eph. iv. 15, 16.

Christ

called us unto his eternal glory by Jesus Christ.-1 Pet. v. 10.

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see.-Rev. iii. 18.

CHAPTER VII.

ETERNAL LIFE, AND CALLING

We are the circumcision, &c. which rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.-Phil. iii. 3. It pleased the Father, that in him GOD'S FREE CHOICE OF US IN CHRIST should all fulness dwell, &c. in (or among) you the hope of glory, whom we preach, warning every man, &c. that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.-Col. i. 19. 27, 28.

In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily; and ye are complete in him, who is the head, &c. Not holding the head, from which all the body, by joints and bands, having nourishment ministered and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.-Col. ii. 9, 10. 19.

Your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, &c. Put on the new man, &c. Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, &c. but Christ is all in all, &c. And whatsoever ye do, in word, or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, &c. Col. iii. 3, 4. 10, 11. 17; 1 Cor. i. 30; ii. 2.

Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.-2 Tim. i. 9, 10.

How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?-Heb. ii. 3.

In that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.-Heb. ii. 18. By one offering, he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified, &c. -Heb. x. 14.

Ye are built up, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.-1 Pet. ii. 5; Heb. xiii. 15.

I WILL be gracious to whom I will be gracious; and I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy.-Exod. xxxiii. 19.

And ye shall be holy unto me, for I, the Lord, am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.-Levit. xx. 26.

Thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God; the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth: the Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people: for ye were the fewest of all people: but because the Lord loved you, &c.Deut. vii. 6-8; xiv. 2.

Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.-Deut. x. 15.

The angel of the Lord appeared unto Manoah's wife, and said unto her, &c. Thou shalt conceive and bear a son, &c. the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb.Judges xiii. 2-5.

The Lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake, because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.-1 Sam. xii. 22.
