It is Called the Escalante

"Newest and best built of all the Santa Fe station hotels"-that's the way Mr. Black, Passenger Traffic Manager of the Santa Fe, describes the new depot-hotel at Ash Fork, Arizona, which was opened March 1, 1907, under management of Fred Harvey.

And this, notwithstanding the fact that the traveling public had supposed the Alvarado, Cardenas and Castaneda-the famous trio of Santa Fe hotels at Albuquerque, Trinidad and Las Vegas,-represented everything superlative in Southwest inn-keeping.

Hotel Escalante is located away out in Arizona, where the Santa Fe branch to Prescott and Phoenix leaves the main California line. Travelers in that region will now enjoy staying at Ash Fork longer than merely between trains.

The building is of steel and concrete construction, which makes it absolutely fire-proof;

is surrounded by wide verandas and tastefully furnished. It has adequate capacity and provides every accessory of a high-class metropolitan hotel.

The architecture is "old mission." has hot and cold water, steam (when necessary), electric lights and phones. There is a large lobby, a lounging room, also writing room, barber lunch room, shop, and buffet. Nearby is an Indian building, where is gathered an exhibit of Indian handicraft, second only to the one at Albuquerque.

Following the Santa Fe custom of naming its best hotels after the Spaniards of the Conquest, this one commemorates that noted padre, Francisco Silvestre Velez Escalante-who sojourned here in 1776. The place where he crossed the Colorado river in Grand Canyon is now known as El Vado de los Padres-"The Crossing of the Fathers."

James M. Pierce of Des Moines, publisher of the Iowa Homestead and four other agricultural journals, has been a visitor in Honolulu recently, planning to return to Iowa about the first of May. Mr. Pierce has his pub lishing business so thoroughly organized that it does not call for his presence and attention all of the time, though he is a prodigious worker, and heartily enjoys every phase of the printing and publishing business, to which most of his life has been devoted.

The Farmers' Tribune, Sioux City, Ia., report an unusually successful subscription season. The very complimentary letters which appear in their advertisement in this issue, show that this publication occupies high rank.

F. L. Weare and Joseph E. Mason, respec tively New England and Western representatives, have severed their connection with Floral Life. E. M. Mansur, who is in charge of the New York office, will now attend to the New England territory, while the Western business will be handled from the home office.

Mr. C. B. Hull has purchased a substantial interest in Vick's Magazine, and has been elected Vice-President and Director. C. E. Gardner, Secretary and Treasurer, has also increased his holdings. Mr. F. C. Owen still remains President of the company, but the management of the magazine will be principally in the hands of Mr. Gardner and Mr. Hull, who propose to continue the policy of improvement which has prevailed with the magazine during the past few years. Vick's Magazine was founded thirty years ago by the great seedsman, whose name it bears, and occupies a distinctive field.
