PREFACE.

The aim of this work is to present, in one volume, the criminal law of Indiana, as defined and settled by statutes and decisions. It contains the statutory law defining offenses and prescribing punishments therefor, and the mode of criminal procedure; an abstract of the decisions of our supreme court in criminal causes, together with forms of indictments, informations, affidavits, pleas, docket entries, etc., for such cases as may arise in the practice.

The forms and precedents have been selected and prepared with much care, and those adopted are principally such as have been approved and stood the test of practice.

The table of cases is arranged so as to enable the reader to consult, at a glance, all the decisions upon the subject under investigation.

The statutes cited are Davies' Revised Statutes of 1876; and they are designated simply by the characters 1 R. S. and 2 R. S. When other statutes are referred to, they are specially named.

A very few special acts are purposely omitted, as they are not deemed of sufficient importance to justify their insertion.

Occasional reference is made to the decisions of the courts of other states, and text books. But these are intended more to direct the reader to those works themselves, than to illustrate any proposition by the reproduction of any considerable portion of them here.

I trust that the book may prove to be useful in abridging the labors of the practitioner, and a useful guide to those who administer the criminal law of Indiana.

ROCKPORT, January, 1879.

G. L. REINHARD.
