I

105.

ALL is o'er; the pain, the sorrow,
Human taunts, and fiendish spite;
Death shall be despoiled to-morrow

Of the prey he grasps to-night;
Yet once more to seal His doom,
Christ must sleep within the tomb.

2 Close and still the cell that holds Him,
While in brief repose He lies;

Deep the slumber that enfolds Him,
Veiled awhile from mortal eyes:
Slumber such as needs must be
After hard-won victory.

3 Fierce and deadly was the anguish
Which on yonder Cross He bore;
How did Soul and Body languish,
Till the toil of death was o'er!

But that toil, so fierce and dread,
Bruised and crushed the Serpent's head.

4 All night long, with plaintive voicing,
Chant His requiem soft and low;
Loftier strains of loud rejoicing
From to-morrow's harps shall flow:
"Death and hell at length are slain,

Christ hath triumphed, Christ doth reign."

Amen.

JESUS Christ is risen to-day,

Our triumphant holy day,

Who did once upon the cross,
Suffer to redeem our loss.

Hallelujah!

2 Hymns of praise then let us sing
Unto Christ, our heavenly King,
Who endured the cross and grave,
Sinners to redeem and save.

3 But the pain which He endured
Our salvation hath procured;
Now above the sky He's King,
Where the angels ever sing.

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah!

Book of Common Prayer.

107.

1 CHRIST the Lord is risen to-day,

I

Sons of men and angels say:

Raise your joys and triumphs high,
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply.

2 Love's redeeming work is done,
Fought the fight, the battle won :
Lo! our Sun's eclipse is o'er ;
Lo! He sets in blood no more.

3 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal
Christ hath burst the gates of hell!
Death in vain forbids His rise;
Christ hath opened Paradise!

4 Lives again our glorious King:
Where, O Death, is now thy sting?
Once He died, our souls to save:
Where thy victory, O Grave?

5 Hail the Lord of earth and heaven,
Praise to Thee by both be given !
Thee we greet triumphant now!
Hail, the Resurrection Thou!

Finita iam sunt prælia.

HALLELUJAH! Hallelujah!

Finished is the battle now;

The Crown is on the Victor's brow!

Hence with sadness:

Sing with gladness

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah Hallelujah!

After sharp death that Him befel,

Jesus Christ hath harrowed hell,

Earth is singing,
Heaven is ringing,

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah Hallelujah!

On the third morning He arose,

Bright with victory o'er His foes,

Sing we lauding,

And applauding,

Hallelujah!

5

Hallelujah Hallelujah!

He hath closed hell's brazen door,
And Heaven is open evermore!
Hence with sadness:

Sing with gladness

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah Hallelujah!

Lord, by Thy Wounds we call on Thee

So from ill death to set us free,

That our living

Be thanksgiving!

Hallelujah!

Ad regias Agni dapes.

AT the Lamb's high feast we sing

Praise to our victorious King,
Who hath washed us in the tide
Flowing from His piercèd side;
Praise we Him, whose love divine
Gives His guests His Blood for wine,
Gives His Body for the feast;

Christ the Victim, Christ the Priest.

2 Where the Paschal Blood is poured, Death's dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel's hosts triumphant go

Through the wave that drowns the foe.
Praise we Christ, Whose Blood was shed,

Paschal Victim, Paschal Bread;

With sincerity and love

Eat the Manna from above.

3 Risen now no more to die,

Hell's fierce powers beneath Thee lie ;
Thou hast conquered in the fight,

Thou hast brought us life and light:
Now no more can death appal,
Now no more the grave enthral;
Thou hast opened Paradise,

And in Thee Thy saints shall rise.

4 Easter triumph, Easter joy—
Sin alone can this destroy;

From sin's power do Thou set free
Souls new-born, O Lord, in Thee.
Hymns of glory and of praise,
Father, unto Thee we raise ;
Risen Lord, all praise to Thee,

With the Spirit, ever be. Amen.

IIO.

'TIS the Day of Resurrection !

Earth! tell it out abroad!
The Passover of Gladness!

The Passover of God!
From death to life eternal,

From earth unto the sky,
Our Christ hath brought us over,
With hymns of victory.

Our hearts be pure from evil,

That we may see aright

The Lord in rays eternal

Of Resurrection-Light :
