Shade of night, and morning ray,
3 May we ne'er, by guilt oppressed,
Lose the way to endless rest;
4. Rather lift them to the skies,
Where our much-loved treasure lies,
5 Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, Three in One!
[Ascension & Whitsuntide.
Jam sol recedit igneus.
O Thou, our everlasting day,
Thy brightness to our hearts display:
To Thee our evening vows are given ;
To praise Thee in the courts of heaven.
No shadows there, nor clouds impede
The view with visions of affright:
The Lamb is their perpetual Light.
May in our souls that scene endure,
May purer grow as Thou art pure.
3 And when the day shall come, that we
Shall know no more, as now,
Be like, and know Thee as Thou art :
Join concert with Thy heavenly host,
Bp. R. Mant. (tr.)
[After Trinity. GOD the Father, be Thou near,
Save from every harm to-night,
In the darkness be our Light. 2 God the Saviour, be our Peace,
Put away our sins to-night;
Turn our darkness into light. 3 Holy Spirit, deign to come,
Sanctify us all to-night ;
Then our darkness shall be light. 4 Holy Trinity, be nigh,
Mystery of love adored !
Lighten all our darkness, Lord! Amen.
On the lowliest weed that grows,
Lull Thy creatures to repose :
2 Saviour! to Thy Father bear
This our feeble evening prayer-
Wishes to Thy cross untrue,
Meet Thy spirit-piercing view.
3 Holy Spirit ! breath of balm !
Fall on us in evening's calm :
Give us truest penitence ;
Breathing humble confidence ;
4 Blessed Trinity, be near
Through the hours of darkness drear,
Watch o'er our defenceless head,
Keep all evil from our bed,
When the soft dews of kindly sleep
3 Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live,
4 If some poor wandering child of Thine
Have spurned to-day the voice divine,
5 Watch by the sick; enrich the poor
With blessings from Thy boundless store;
6 Come near and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take ;
