Great Poets and Their Theology

The author is inclined to believe the great poets give a united and harmonious testimony to the fundamental conceptions of natural religions, if not to those of the specifically Christian scheme. The following poets and the theme for each is as follows: Homer, the Homeric question and the Homeric theology; Virgil, poet of the Roman Empire; Dante, Dante and the Divine Comedy; Shakespeare, the universality of Shakespeare; Milton, poet of the Protestant reformation; Goethe, poet of Pantheism; Wordsworth, poet of nature; Browning, his poetry and theology; Tennyson, poetry as interpreting the Divine Order.
