Of the 699 applicants who made application during the past twelve months, 422, or 63%, were examined, and of these 258, or 62%, passed the examination.

Including those that made application before March i, 1897, 873 applicants were called by mail for examination; 724 of them appeared; of the 571 that finished the examination 292, or 51%, passed, indicating higher average qualifications of the applicants of the most recent period.
