AS YOU LIKE IT.

ROSALIND.

Beauty provoketh thieves sooner than gold.

DUKE.

Sweet are the uses of adversity;

Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,

Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,

Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in every thing.

FIRST LORD.

a poor sequester'd stag,

That from the hunters' aim had ta'en a hurt,
Did come to languish; and, indeed, my lord,
The wretched animal heaved forth such groans,
That their discharge did stretch his leathern coat
Almost to bursting.

ADAM.

Though I look old, yet I am strong and lusty:
For in my youth I never did apply
Hot and rebellious liquor in my blood;
Therefore my age is as a lusty winter
Frosty, but kindly.

JAQUES.

O worthy fool! One that hath been a courtier
And says, if ladies be but young and fair,

They have the gift to know it: and in his brain, –
Which is as dry as the remainder biscuit

After a voyage,

- he hath strange places cramm'd

With observations, the which he vents

In mangled forms:

O that I were a fool!

.I must have liberty

Withal, as large a charter as the wind,

To blow on whom I please....

.give me leave

To speak my mind, and I will through and through
Cleanse the foul body of the infected world,
If they will patiently receive my medicine..

All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.

I have neither the scholar's melancholy, which is emulation; nor the musician's, which is fantastical; nor the courtier's, which is proud; nor the soldier's, which is ambitious; nor the. lawyer's, which is politic; nor the lady's, which is nice; nor the lover's, which is all these.

ROSALIND.

.....men are April when they woo, December when they wed: maids are May when they are maids, but the sky changes when they are wives.

. Make the doors upon a woman's wit,

and it will out at the casement; shut that, and 'twill out at the key-hole; stop that, 'twill fly with the smoke out at the chimney.

OLIVER.

Under an oak, whose boughs were moss'd with age,
And high top bald with dry antiquity,

A wretched, ragged man, o'ergrown with hair,
Lay sleeping on his back: about his neck
A green and gilded snake had wreath'd itself,
Who with his head, nimble in threats, approach'd
The opening of his mouth: but suddenly,
Seeing Orlando, it unlink'd itself,
And with indented glides did slip away
Into a bush under which bush's shade,
A lioness, with udders all drawn dry,

Lay couching, head on ground, with cat-like watch, When that the sleeping man should stir; for 'tis The royal disposition of that beast,

To prey on nothing that doth seem as dead.

TWELFTH NIGHT;

OR,

WHAT YOU WILL.

DUKE.

If music be the food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it; that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.
That strain again;-it had a dying fall;
O, it came o'er my ear like the sweet south,
That breathes upon a bank of violets,
Stealing and giving odour.

O, she that hath a heart of that fine frame,
To pay this debt of love but to a brother,
How will she love, when the rich golden shaft
Hath kill'd the flock of all affections else
That live in her!
