Under date of May 11, 1897, Consul Little, of Tegucigalpa (Consular Reports, No. 203, August, 1897), writes: The original tariff law, with its eleven classes, is published in the Handbook of Honduras, issued by the Bureau of American Republics, the classes being given at the end. Since the publication of the original law duties have been increased, first 20 per cent on the original amount, and then 30 per cent on this total. In place of these two separate increases, the new law provides that all goods imported shall be subjected to an additional tax of 100 per cent over and above the original duties and warehouse dues. The following is the "original tariff" mentioned by Consul Little, with the 100 per cent" additional duties added, in the bureau of foreign commerce, bringing the tariff up to December, 1898, as far as statistics in the bureau justified. The reduction of the silver peso of Honduras to American currency would be of no permanent use, owing to the fluctuations in its value. |
