Money.-The monetary unit of the Republic of Salvador is the peso, which is divided into 100 centavos. The value was estimated by the United States Director of the Mint, April 1, 1899, as 43.4 cents. As the currency fluctuates, no attempt to give the United States equivalents of the duties has been made.

Weights and measures.-The metrical system has been adopted in Salvador.

Cognac and alcoholic beverages, sweet or dry, imported in barrels or other recip
ients holding more than one liter, shall pay 60 centavos per kilogram, gross
weight.

ART. 2. Cognac of an alcoholic strength exceeding 22° Cartier shall pay a surtax
of 5 centavos.

Liqueurs, strong or sweet, of a strength up to 22° Cartier or 59° centigrade:

In oasks or other receptacles exceeding one liter, kilogram..

In ordinary bottles of 1 liter or less, kilogram

Spirituous or sweet liqueurs up to a strength of 500 centigrade:

In receptacles not exceeding 1 liter, per kilogram.

In larger receptacles, over 500 in strength, 6 centavos per additional degree, per
kilogram..

Wines or liqueurs, strong or sweet, of a noxious composition, such as alcoholic
molasses, shall be destroyed. Only 220 centigrade of alcohol shall be tolerated for
imported wines; in cases when the wine is of a greater strength the duty shall be
increased at the rate of 5 centavos per degree.

ART. 2. Importers of wines and liqueurs shall be required to declare the real alcoholic strength of these articles in their invoices and bulletins. Should it result from the analysis that the wines or liqueurs contain more alcohol than that declared, the importer shall, save in case of an error of one degree, be subject to double the duties.
