A Christian Father's Present to his Family. HOLIDAY GIFT FOR THE YEAR 1844.

RICH, AMUSING, AND INSTRUCTIVE BOOK!
"He who blends instruction with delight,
Profit with pleasure, carries all the votes."

A BOOK FOR EVERY FAMILY IN THE UNITED STATES. Se ars' Guide to Knowledge;

The following important and interesting Work consists of Five Hundred pages octavo, containing upwards of FIVE HUNDRED new and beautiful ENGRAVINGS, fine paper, handsomely bound in gilt, and lettered, and is afforded at the low price of $2.50 per copy. In preparing the present volume, our aim has been to make a BOOK (for its size and price), the VERY BEST and MOST USEFUL ever published in modern times; aiming at universal excellence, that it might be justly entitled to universal patronage and support. On examination, it will be found useful, and eminently adapted to interest, instruct, and improve. It is suited to persons of all ages and of every rank, and is equally worthy of a place in the parlor as in the kitchen, among the limited collection of the young, as well as the various and more extended library of the man of reading. We think it would be difficult to select a more appropriate GIFT at the approaching holidays. The writings of the most eminent divines that have ever lived are laid under contribution, and passages of eminent beauty are taken from them. If, therefore, variety has charms, or religion is lovely, or eloquence is admired, this book will be read with delight; for here is variety without looseness, religion without fanaticism, and eloquence pleading the cause of God with man. The following is its expressive title:

RECOMMENDATIONS.

The following extract is from a lengthy review written by the Rev. W. C. Brownlee, D. D., and is only ONE out of several hundred recommendations, from the clergy and the press, that the work has already received:

"NEW YORK, August 6, 1843. "This is, beyond question, one of the most elegant books ever presented to our fellow-citizens in this republic. It ought to be in every Christian family for its innate value; and in every patriotic family as a splendid specimen of our progress in domestic manufacture, and the advancement of our artists and manufacturers in their rivalship with those of Europe.

"W. C. BROWNLEE."

From the New York Observer, July 30-The following editorial notice of Mr. Sears' new and elegant work on the Bible is from the New York Observer, one of the oldest, most respectable, and best conducted religious newspapers published in the United States. An opinion coming from this high quarter is worth a thousand of the ephemeral puffs that are published in the papers of the day:

"We have just received this work, published under the editorial auspices It is brought of Mr. Sears, the publisher of the Pictorial Illustrations.' out with great neatness, the paper and typography of the first quality, and the engravings, many of them, for wood-cuts, are very fine. piece, by Lossing, is particularly worthy of commendation, being one of the finest specimens of wood-engraving which we have lately seen.

The Appendix contains a series of selected Biblical articles, carefully condensed and compiled from the most distinguished writers, constituting altogether the most valuable part of the work.
