we be watchful over our own spirits, and remember that our trials, however numerous and severe, rise not from the dust, but are sent by thee in mercy, to purify our affections, to improve our hearts, and to ripen us for a nobler being.

Give us wisdom in every different stage, and through every changing scene of our mortal journey, to keep in mind the great purpose for which we ought to live. As the time of our departure hence draws near, may we have brighter views and more ardent desires of heavenly joy. Be thou, O merciful Father ! our comfort and our support in the solemn hour of death; and at last bring us, through thine infinite goodness, to that glorious world, where there is nothing to offend, or wound, or grieve, and

where, with all the ransomed of the Lord, we hope to celebrate thy love in songs of everlasting gratitude and praise.

O thou who exercisest a parent's tenderness towards all the children of men! hasten, if it seem good in thy sight, the happy period, when the pure gospel of thy Son shall be known in every region of the globe. Administer the rich consolations of thy providence and grace to those who are struggling with affliction, and enable them to put their trust in thee. We beseech thee to bless our relations and friends according to their several circumstances, and, above all things, to grant them an interest in thy saving mercy.

To thee, the Father of all the families of the earth, who hast brought

us to the close of another day, we cheerfully commit ourselves, through the defenceless hours of night, and through the remaining part of our lives. Bless us, O God! and keep us: suffer no evil to come nigh our dwelling; but give us peace now and

evermore.

These our praises and supplications we offer up at the footstool of thy throne, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

We, the children of men, have perpetual cause to rejoice in the riches of thy mercy for thou makest known unto us thy saving strength from day to day.

In our own history, as well as in that of the world, we trace the testimonies of thy benignity. Thy hand has led us in the way of safety and of peace, and thou hast put into our mouths the song of thanksgiving. Praised be thy name for the supply of our returning wants, and for thy gracious care of us, amidst the many dangers to which we have been exposed. In thee we live and move and have our being. If thou hidest thy face, we are troubled; if thou wast to withdraw thy support, even for a moment, we should sink into

the grave.

We bless thee, heavenly Father! for every discovery of thyself, with which thou hast been pleased to favour us; and above all, for thine unspeakable love manifested to a
