Invalids need no longer dread to take that great specific for consumption-Cod-Liver Oil and Phosphates. As prepared by Dr. Wilbor, it is robbed of the nauseating taste, and also embodies a preparation of the Phosphates, giving nature the very article required to aid the healing qualities of the Oil, and to re-create where disease has destroyed. This article also forms a remarkable tonic, and will cause weak and debilitated persons to become strong and robust. To one unfamiliar with Spanish, this volume is a revelation of the poetic wealth of the literature of these Spanish-American countries, while to one who reads Spanish it will be a welcome addition to the school readers and manuals of literature.-San Francisco Chronicle.

AMERICA, AND OTHER POEMS. BY HENRY HAMILTON.

THE POET'S BY HENRY HAMILTON.

16mo, cloth, pp. 210, $1.00. PRAISE.

16mo, cloth, pp. 165, $1.00. "Bishop Spalding has written two books, which have excited much attention from the critics of both Europe and America. 'Poetry is, as Aristotle says, the most philosophic of all writing. It is thought transfused with the glow of emotion, and consequently thought made beautiful, attractive, contagious.' This, said by Bishop Spalding, in Education and the Higher Life,' is true of the poetry in his books, 'America' and 'The Poet's Praise.' Perhaps Wordsworth has influenced Henry Hamilton's' poems more than any other poet. It is hard to trace any other influence, for he is so individual, so sincere, so philosophical, at once brilliant and glowing; and it cannot be said that religion has cramped his art, for it has broadened and perfected it,-made it as serene and pure among earthly things as the lady in Milton's 'Comus.'"-Maurice Francis Egan in The Magazine of Poetry. RECENT BOOKS.

Palmer, Fanny Purdy. A Dead Level, and Other Episodes. By Fanny Purdy Palmer. An entertaining volume of short stories. 12mo, paper, 274 pages. Price, 50 cents.

This book is a collection of stories, ten in number, the name of the first being the title of the book. The character of the stories is so radically different from the character of stories usually published in this form, that Book Notes hardly knows how, in a terse phrase, to describe it. They are fiction, of course, but I can't divest myself of the idea that a bit of real life is mixed somewhat into them. * Her stories are graphically told.-Book Notes. Lively and readable.-Albany Journal. Shows skill.-Brooklyn Eagle.

Nourse, Laura A. Sunderlin. The Lyric of Life, Unfolding Principles of Immortality in the Seen and Unseen Forces of Nature. By Laura A. Sunderlin Nourse, author of "Pencilings From Immortality." 16mo, cloth, port., 172 pages. Price, $1.00.

Fxpresses clearly enough the views and theories of the writer, and some of these are interesting.-Religio-Philosophical Journal.

Brittingham, Florence V. Verse and Story. By Florence V. Brittingham. With a Memoir by Rt. Rev. George W. Peterkin, D. D., Bishop of West Virginia, with portrait. 12m0, cloth, vii. and 220 pages. Price, $1.25.

The verses possess merit, some of them being especially good. The stories are well written, and show a keen insight into character and motive. We hope the book will have the large sale it deserves.-Living Church.

There is not a line in this volume which does not bear the impress of the graceful, womanly mind that gave them birth.Baltimore American.

Stout, Robert W. The Complete Poetical Works of Robert W. Stout, complete in One Volume. 12mo, cloth, about 300 pages. Price, $1.25

The collection includes national and patriotic poems, tales of adventure, poems of sentiment and affection, fairy and fanciful and miscellaneous poems. An address to the city of Chicago, and memorial greeting to Columbus, written to commemorate the Columbian Exposition, is one of the good features of the book, and with "The Song of Liberty" and other compositions, stamp the author with genius and ensure him a place amongst the hright galaxy of American poets who have achieved a permanent place in the affections of their countrymen.-Chicago Sun.

Hensul, Octavia. Imperia. A Story of the Court of Austria. By Octavia Hensel, author of "The Life of Louis Moreau Gottschalk," "The Rinegold Triology,' "Holly Cross,"

"The

12mo,

Ruthvens," "Cedar Grove Series," etc. paper, 352 pages. Price, 75 cents. Cloth, full gilt, $1.50.

The plot is a somewhat intricate one, and the canvass is at times a little too crowded, but Mme. Hensel has developed it with considerable dramatic skill, and into its web of passion and adventure she has deftly woven a rich embroidery of color, for which the picturesque and romantic accessories of the life and the localities she has depisted furnish ample material.-The Home Journal.

A novel highly romantic in character and somewhat unusual in its conception. The scene is laid in Southeastern Europe, and the author shows great familiarity with the manners and customs of people who escape the notice of ordinary writers. There is a tone of realism running through the book which conveys the impression that there is quite as much fact as fiction in it, in spite of its romantic character.-San Fransisco Chronicle.
