He brought us good news of our Lyons friends, and said he must not return to them without taking back a strict promise that we would go over and pay them a visit during the year; but such longanticipated plans seldom-never, I may say-turn out as hoped for, and therefore I always avoid making them.

It seems to me presumptuous to reckon what next year, or even next month, may bring forth. One of my customary sayings is, "I have no belief in the future, so far as this world is concerned." This feeling has been forced upon me by noting, over and over again, how entirely circumstances have changed ere the time has arrived for which the pleasant plan was sought to be fixed; sometimes even Death has stepped in, and carried away that very being round whom our hopes centred, and for whom the smiling vista was traced.
