BERKELEY.

The Fitzhardinge Day School (Boys) was examined in Drawing on Monday, 24th March.

The Churchyard has at last been put in order and now looks more like "God's Garden" than it has for some time past. The expense is borne at present by the 8 a.m. Offertories, which have been unusually large, but direct Offerings for the purpose of keeping the Churchyard in good order will be thankfully received. Lady Fitzhardinge has planted Irish Yews and Mahonia on one side of the path to the South Door opposite the row of Lauristines.

The Treasurer of the Young Men's Friendly Society begs to acknowledge the receipt of a half-sovereign put into the bag on the 4th Sunday in Lent, at 11 a.m., and directed to be given to the Society.

The Rev. B. Birbeck, Organising Secretary of the Church of England Temperance Society, has promised to come to Berkeley on the 23rd April. The Meeting will be held as usual at the Town Hall, and we hope that there will be a large attendance.

There will be a Concert and Popular Entertainment in the Town Hall, on the 21st April, for the Young Men's Friendly Society. Mrs. Graham, of Rednock, and Miss Searancke, of The Rangers, Dursley, have kindly promised to sing; also the Rev. H. Ault, Mr. Petifer, Mr. Thomas, Miss Gregory, and others, whose names will appear in the Bills.

The following is a short Statement of the Offertory Account, St. John's, Purton.

COALEY.

Summary of H.M. Inspector's Report on the School." The School continues to make progress. Its order and tone are thoroughly satisfactory, and the work as a whole good. Reading, in which there are no failures, is decidely good in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh Standards and elsewhere very fair, both in fluency and intelligence, though in this as in other subjects the inferiority of the Girls' work to that of the Boys' is still noticeable. Handwriting is good, Spelling very fair. Arithmetic is good in the third Standard, rather weak in the first and decidedly weak in the fifth, sixth, and seventh; elsewhere fairly good. English passes decidedly well, especially the Grammar of the third and fourth Standards, and the Recitation generally. Needlework is fairly taught and singing is quite satisfactory.... The Infants are in very fair order and their instruction in Elementary Subjects satisfactory so far as Reading and Writing are concerned, but defective as regards Arithmetic. The gallery teaching is sufficient in amount, and the lesson which I heard given was lively and fairly well constructed. Their needlework is of fair merit ....

The Prizes will now shortly be given to all those who have passed in Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. The children attending the Sunday School will also receive their Prizes at the same time,

On Thursday, March 20th, a Vestry Meeting was held, at which the following Parochial Officers were elected for the ensuing year:-Guardian--Mr. Thomas Savage; Overseers —Mr. William Smith, Mrs. Lois Hill, Mr. Grantley Parker, Mr. George Bailey; Waywardens-Mr. William Smith and Mr. Charles William Prout. At the same meeting the Allotment Wardens for the past year were re-elected, viz. :-Rev. W. J. Evans, Vicar (ex-officio); Mr. Charles Hadley, Churchwarden; Mr. T. Camm, and Mr. Robert Prout. The Treasurer's Accounts, showing a balance in hand (without arrears) of 1. 8s. 2d. and a deposit of £82. 7s. id. in the Post Office Savings Bank, were passed. The Recreation Ground was let for one year from March 25th, to Henry Workman.

The Coal Club will be again opened on Monday, April 7th. Deposits of sixpence (or less) per week will be received at the School-room at 12.30 o'clock on that day and on all subsequent Mondays.

66

“O come and mourn with me awhile ;

O come ye to the Saviour's side;
O come together let us mourn ;
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified."

On Easter Day there will be two celebrations of the Holy Communion, viz., at 8.30 a.m. and after the Morning Service. This is one of the days in the year on which all good Christians, and all consistent Church people make a point of coming to this Holy Feast (see Rubric at the end of the Communion Service). The Vicar earnestly hopes that all Communicants who are able will be present either at the early or the mid-day Celebration, and that many others who have hitherto put off coming will put off doing so no longer.

The Collections on Easter Day will be for Church Expenses.
