HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP.

THIS Township is bounded on the north by Warren county, on the south by Eugene township, on the east by the Wabash river, and on the west by the boundary line of Illinois. It is watered by Spring, Jordan and Jericho creeks, and Coal Branch; all of which take their rise in the north-west, and flow south-east to the Wabash river.

The area of the township, like the others of the county, is irregular in its sectional lines, and therefore it varies in both its sections and square miles. Its length north and south is from eight to nine miles, and its breadth from five to six.

Its organization dates back to that of the county, in 1824, when the red men of the forest were seen incidentally on its hunting grounds, as though they were still mournfully lingering around the graves of their fathers.

There are two prairies in this township, Mound Prairie on the north and Sand Prairie on the south. The soil is rich, the scenery beautiful, and the skirting of the bluffs makes the presentation highly attractive.

Thomas Wright, who settled in the township in 1824, is said to have brought the first hogs into his neighborhood. It is also told of him that he tended his first crop of corn with a single He had been possessed of two, but soon after his arrival
