JOURNAL OF THE SENATE.

SENATE CHAMBER, COLUMBUS, OHIO,

TUESDAY, January 4, 1887-4 O'CLOCK P. M.

The General Assembly having adjourned on the nineteenth day of May, A. D. 1886, to meet again on the fourth day of January, A. D. 1887, at 4 o'clock p. m., the members of the Senate convened at that hour and were cailed to order by the President of the Senate, Lieutenant-Governor Robert P. Kennedy.

Prayer by Rev. Dr. Moore.

Mr. Zimmermann demanded a call of the Senate, which was had, and 32 Senators answered to their names.

The absentees were: Messrs. Dodd, Lawrence, Richardson, Schmieder and Welch.

On motion of Mr. Zimmermann, all further proceedings under the call were dispensed with.

On motion of Mr. Conrad, a message was sent to the House of Representatives informing that body that the Senate has convened in adjourned session and is ready for the transaction of business.

The Senator from Allen (Mr, Mehaffey) announced to the Senate the death of his colleague, Hon. John P. Schmieder, and moved that a committee of seven be appointed to attend the funeral of the deceased.

Mr. Ely moved to amend the motion by providing that said committee should consist of nine, instead of seven members.

The amendment was accepted by Mr. Mehaffey.

The question being on agreeing to the motion, as amended, the yeas and nays were demanded, ordered, taken and resulted-yeas 32, nays none, as follows:

Those who voted in the affirmative were: Messrs. Cable, Codding, Conrad, Coulter, Crites, Crouse, Dow, Eggers, Eltzroth, Ely, Fassett, Ford, Glazier, Gregg, Groschner, Hardacre, Hogue, Kemp, Kirchner, Lindsey, McGill, Mehaffey, O'Neill, Pavey, Pringle, Pugsley, Rannells, Sinnett, Sullivan, Van Cleaf, Williston, Zimmermann-32.

So the motion, as amended, was agreed to.

The Chair then appointed as said committee, Messrs. Mehaffey, Gregg, Groschner, Glazier, Zimmermann, Eggers, Sinnett, Cable and Fassett.

On motion of Mr. Sullivan, a committee of five was appointed to draft suitable resolutions on the death of Senator Schmieder, said committee to report at the hour of three o'clock and thirty minutes on Tuesday, January 11, 1887.

The Chair appointed as such committee, Messrs. Sullivan, Pringle, O'Neill, McGill and Codding.

Mr. Cable moved that the Senate stand adjourned on Thursday next, that being the date of the funeral services, and that as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, the flag of the Senate be placed on that day at half-mast.

Which was agreed to.
