H! that closer I could cleave
To thy tender, loving breast!
Give me firmly to believe,

And to enter into rest.

MAY he fit us, by his grace,

For that eternal dwelling place,

Where the "Great Sun" burns ever bright, And day will never see a night!

ELLEN ROBERTS.

H, may the sorrow which thy death has given, To thee be equalled in the joys of heaven.

GOD, whose thunder shakes the sky,

Whose eye

this atom globe surveys,

To thee, my only rock, I fly,

Thy mercy in thy justice praise.

CHATTERTON.

GENTLE grave, can'st thou defile, As life can make our bodies vile? Breathe, Lord, thy living Spirit's breath, Upon the body of this death!

Put on-before unclothed it lie

This mortal immortality!

BUT thou, O Lord, can'st raise the dead,

And bid the sleeper rise;
Arouse him from his earthly bed,

To dwell above the skies.
Well, if I must resign my breath,
Unworthy though I am,

Like Lazarus, O, may my death

Bring glory to thy name.

W. WALKER.

ORD! remember me when thou comest into thy

kingdom.

LUKE Xxiii. 22.

ESUS, the sinner's friend, to thee,

Lost and undone, for aid I flee;

Weary of earth, myself, and sin,
Open thine arms and take me in.

EARER, my God, to thee!
Nearer to thee!

E'en though it be a cross,
That raiseth me!

WHEN, bursting from my bed of dust,
I stand before thy judgment throne,

Be thou my refuge, thou my trust;

Lord, let me feel I'm not alone.

REPARE us, Lord, for thy right hand!

Then come the joyful day,

Come death, and some celestial band
To bear our souls away.

LEAVE this world without a tear,

Save for the friends we held so dear; To heal their sorrows, Lord, descend, And to the friendless prove a friend.

LET the dead now hear thy voice, Now bid thy banished ones rejoice; Their beauty this, their glorious dress, Jesus, the Lord our Righteousness!

HE hour is near! consigned to death,
I own the just decree;

Saviour! with my last parting breath,
"Remember me!"

I'll cry,

REAT God, I wait thy kind decree;
O let me die to live with thee!

EXPRESSING CONFIDENCE AND

TRUST IN GOD.

PSALM lvi. 11.

E quickens the dead by the word of his grace,
He opens the eyes of the blind;

Then leads to the Saviour for pardon and peace,
And blessings of every kind.

REST upon thy word;

Thy promise is for me!
My succour and salvation, Lord,
Shall surely come from thee,

ET sickness blast and death devour,
If heaven shall recompense our pains;
Perish the grass, and fade the flower,

If firm the word of God remains.

8. WESLEY.

HOUGH I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou PSALM Xxiii. 4.

art with me.

ET us in life and death,

Thy steadfast truth declare;
And publish with our latest breath
Thy love and guardian care.

OD will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me.

PSALM xlix. 15.

EVER shall my soul despair
Her pardon to procure;

Who knows thy only Son has died

To make that pardon sure.

ADDISON.

VES! dust and ashes is my proper name;
Ready to perish-is my title clear?
From two poor rebels, I, their offspring, came;
My first, my native element, is fear:

Yet let thy grace on this dark void descend,
All shall be safe-the Three in One my Friend.
