GOD MADE THEM ALL.

ALL things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The LORD GOD made them all.

Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colors, He made their tiny wings.

The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
GOD made them, high or lowly,
And ordered their estate.

The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset, and the morning,
That brightens up the sky.

The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,

He made them every one.

THE GREEN PASTURES.

THE GREEN PASTURES.

I WALKED in a field of fresh clover this morn,
Where lambs played so merrily under the trees,
Or rubbed their soft coats on a naked old thorn,
Or nibbled the clover, or rested at ease.

And under the hedge ran a clear water-brook,
To drink from when thirsty, or weary with play :
And so gay did the daisies and buttercups look,
That I thought little lambs must be happy all day.

And when I remember the beautiful psalm,
That tells about CHRIST and His pastures so green,
I know He is willing to make me His lamb,
And happier far than the lambs I have seen.

If I drink of the waters so peaceful and still,
That flow in His field, I forever shall live;
If I love Him, and seek His commands to fulfil,

A place in His sheepfold to me He will give.

The lambs are at peace in the fields when they play; The long summer's day in contentment they spend; But happier I, if in God's holy way,

I try to walk always, with CHRIST for my friend.

A MORNING HYMN.

My Father, I thank Thee for sleep,
For quiet and peaceable rest;

I thank Thee for stooping to keep

[ocr errors]

An infant from being distressed;

O how can a poor little infant repay

Thy fatherly kindness by night and by day!

My voice would be lisping Thy praise,
My heart would repay Thee with love;
O teach me to walk in Thy ways,

And fit me to see Thee above;

For JESUS said, "Let little children come nigh;
And He'll not despise such an infant as I.

As long as Thou seest it right,

That here upon earth I should stay, I pray Thee to guard me by night, And help me to serve Thee by day;

That when all the days of my life shall have pass'd, I may worship Thee better in heaven, at last.

THE EYES OF THE ANGELS.

THE EYES OF THE ANGELS.

A little girl was disappointed when her mother told her what the stars were. She said," I thought they were the eyes of the angels."

"MOTHER, what are those little things,

That twinkle from the skies?"

"The stars, my child." "I thought, mother, They were the angels' eyes.

"They look down on me, so like yours,

As beautiful and mild;

When, by my crib you used to sit,
And watch your feverish child.

"And, always, when I shut my eyes,
And said my little prayers,

I felt so safe: because I knew
That they had opened theirs."

THE HEAVENLY DOVE.

THERE sitteth a Dove so white and fair,
All on the lily spray,

And she listeth how, to JESUS CHRIST,
The little children pray.

Lightly she spreads her friendly wings,
And to heaven's gate hath sped,

And unto the Father in heaven she bears
The prayers which the children have said.

And back she comes from heaven's gate,
And brings, that Dove so mild-

From the Father in heaven, who hears her speak,
A blessing for every child.

Then, children, lift up a pious prayer,

It hears whatever you say,

That Heavenly Dove, so white and fair,
That sits on the lily spray.
