C. A. MURDOCK & CO., PRINTERS,

In this edition of the Political Code, the entire text, which has been subjected to greater changes than that of any of the Codes, is presented as in force at the present time. All the amendments since the adoption of this Code, including those of the regular and special sessions of 1881, have been incorporated, the sections being printed as they appeared to stand under the rulings of the Supreme Court. The time when each amendment goes into effect is noted when different from the usual period of sixty days after passage; otherwise the date of approval, merely, is given.

The notes aim to embody in the least possible space, under the appropriate sections, the gist of all the decisions rendered by the highest tribunal in the State. The system of annotation employed is substantially the same as that adopted in the Code of Civil Procedure. Catch-words in graphic type are used with the same suggestive design. In the important departments of Taxation and State Lands, where greater fulness seemed desirable, it has been the endeavor to secure it without sacrificing compactness of expression.

Statutes of a general nature, either affecting the text of the Code or having a material bearing on the topics it covers, have been incorporated in the Appendix. Although there are numerous cross-references in the body of the work, the Index, hich is framed on the alphabetical plan, has been made unusually copious. Altogether the hope is entertained that the volume will be found useful not only to the profession, but also to county officers and other citizens whose duties it concerns; and that it will merit the appreciative favor accorded to the similar edition of the Code of Civil Procedure.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug., 1881.
