I. These forms are accented upon the PENULT; 1. All infinitives in ναι ; as, βεβουλευκέναι, βουλευθῆναι, ἱστάναι, ἑστάναι (§ 298).

2. The infinitive of the first aorist active and second aorist middle ; as, βουλεῦσαι, λιπέσθαι (§ 287).

3. The perfect passive infinitive and participle; as, peßovλεῦσθαι, βεβουλευμένος.

Except a few preteritive participles; as, žμevos (§ 309), xɛíμevos (§ 310).

§ 425. II. These forms are oxYTONE;

1. Participles in s, G. Tos, except in the first aorist active; as, βεβουλευκώς, βουλευθείς, ἱστάς, στάς· but, βουλεύ

σας.

2. The second aorist active participle; as, linár, σrás.

3. The second aorist imperative forms, ɛiné, say, ¿lDé, come, evos, find, and, in pure Attic, idé, sec, and laßé, take. Except in composition; thus, eλDe, eloide.

§ 426. III. These forms are PERISPOMENA; 1. The second aorist infinitive in ɛiv; as, hɩnɛiv.

2. The second person singular of the second aorist middle imperative; as, λιποῦ, δοῦ (§ 301).

Except in compounds of more than two syllables; as, ἐκλίπου, ἀπόδου· but προδοῦ.

IV. The accent of a verb in COMPOSITION, can never be thrown further back than the augment, or further than the tone syllable of the word prefixed; thus, παρέχω (παρά, ἔχω, § 417), παρεῖχον, παρέσχον, παράσχες.

$427. REMARKS. 1. The second aorist is sometimes accented as an imperfect (§ 380); thus, Inf. άuvvádir, oxéθειν, Part. σχέθων (§ 376, δ); πρίασο, πρίω, πρίασθαι (§ 299). 2. Monosyllables long by nature, except participles, are generally circumflexed; thus, si, v, ň, wv (§ 305); oxw, oxεiv, σχών (§ 317).

3. Contracted forms are commonly accented according to the rule (§ 111); thus, βουλευθῶ (§ 325); τιμῶ, ἐτίμων, τιμῶ μαι, ἐτιμώμην (§ 295); στελῶ, κρινῶ (§ 81); ἱστᾶσι, τιθεῖσι (§ 83); ἱστῶ, τιθώμαι, διδῶμαι (§ 362).

The subjunctive passive of verbs in μ, and of perfects used in the sense of the present, is often accented as though uncontracted; thus, τίθωμαι, τίπη, τίθηται· δίδωμαι· κέκτωμαι, μέμνωμαι (§ 368). And, on the other hand, the optative passive of these verbs is accented by many as though contracted; thus, τιθεῖο, τιθεῖτο· διδοῖο· κεκτῇο, κεκτῇτο.

4. For the accentuation of φημί (§ 303) and εἰμί (§ 305), see §§ 116, 117.

5. Examples of irregular or various accentuation are φής, φάθι oι φαθί, Imp. εἶπον or εἰπόν (§ 303) ; ιών (§ 306); κίω, to go, poetic, Part. κιών· χρή, ἐχρῆν, χρεών (§ 404. 4).
