an-gel of the Lord came down, And glo-ry shone around, And glory shone a-round.

206. C. M.

2. "Fear not," said he-for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled mind-
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring,
To you and all mankind.

3. "To you, in David's town, this day,
Is born of David's line,

The Saviour, who is Christ, the Lord,
And this shall be the sign:

4. "The heavenly babe you there shall find, To human view displayed,

All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,
And in a manger laid."

5. Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels, praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song:

6. "All glory be to God on high,

And to the earth be peace;

Good-will henceforth from heaven to men
Begin, and never cease!"

207. C. M.

1. AWAKE-awake the sacred song To our incarnate Lord!

Let every heart, and every tongue,
Adore th' eternal Word.

TATE.

2. That awful Word, that sovereign Power,
By whom the worlds were made-
Oh! happy morn-illustrious hour!-
Was once in flesh arrayed.

1. ANGELS rejoiced and sweetly sung,
At our Redeemer's birth;
Mortals! awake; let every tongue
Proclaim His matchless worth.

2. Glory to God, who dwells on high,
And sent His only Son

To take a servant's form, and die,
For evils we had done!

3. Good-will to men; ye fallen race!
Arise, and shout for joy;

He comes, with rich, abounding grace
To save, and not destroy.

4. Lord! send the gracious tidings forth,
And fill the world with light,

That Jew and Gentile, through the earth,
May know Thy saving might.

1. ANGELS, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth, Ye who sang creation's story, Now proclaim Messiah's birth; Come and worship, Worship Christ the new-born King. 2. Shepherds, in the field abiding,

Watching o'er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing,

Yonder shines the infant-light;

Come and worship,
Worship Christ the new-born King.
3. Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen His natal star;
Come and worship,

Worship Christ the new-born King. 4. Saints, before the altar bending,

Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear; Come and worship, Worship Christ the new-born King. 5. Sinners, wrung with true repentance, Doomed for guilt to endless pains, Justice now revokes the sentence, Mercy calls you-break your chains; Come and worship,

Worship Christ the new-born King.

THRICE HOLY.

MONTGOMERY.

1. "LORD, Thy glory fills the heaven;
Earth is with its fullness stored;
Unto Thee be glory given,
Holy, holy, holy Lord!"

Heaven is still with anthems ringing:
Earth takes up the angels' cry,
"Holy, holy, holy," singing,

"Lord of hosts, the Lord most High!" 2. Ever thus in God's high praises,

Brethren, let our tongues unite,
While our thoughts His greatness raises,
And our love His gifts excite.
With His seraph train before Him,
With His holy church below,
Thus unite we to adore Him,

Bid we thus our anthem flow:

3. "Lord, Thy glory fills the heaven;
Earth is with its fullness stored;
Unto Thee be glory given,
Holy, holy, holy Lord!
Thus, Thy glorious name confessing,
We adopt the angels' cry,
"Holy, holy, holy"-blessing

Thee, the Lord our God most High!"

ANCIENT HYMNS.

212. 8s & 7s. Double.

1. MIGHTY God! while angels bless Thee,
May a mortal lisp Thy name?
Lord of men, as well as angels!

Thou art every creature's theme:
Lord of every land and nation!
Ancient of eternal days!
Sounded through the wide creation,
Be Thy just and lawful praise.

2. For the grandeur of Thy nature-
Grand beyond a seraph's thought;
For the wonders of creation,

Works with skill and kindness wrought;
For Thy providence, that governs
Through Thine empire's wide domain,
Wings an angel, guides a sparrow;
Blessed be Thy gentle reign.

3. For Thy rich, Thy free redemption,
Bright, though veiled in darkness long;
Thought is poor, and poor expression,
Who can sing that wondrous song?
Brightness of the Father's glory!
Shall Thy praise unuttered lie?
Break, my tongue! such guilty silence,
Sing the Lord who came to die:

4. From the highest throne of glory,
To the cross of deepest wo,
Came to ransom guilty captives!
Flow, my praise! forever flow:
Re-ascend, immortal Saviour!

Leave Thy footstool, take Thy throne;
Thence return and reign for ever;
Be the kingdom all Thine own!

213. 8s & 7s.

ROBINSON.

1. PRAISE the Lord! ye heavens, adore Him;
Praise Him, angels in the height;
Sun and moon, rejoice before Him;
Praise Him, all ye stars of light!

2. Praise the Lord-for He hath spoken;
Worlds His mighty voice obeyed;
Laws which never shall be broken,
For their guidance He hath made.

3. Praise the Lord-for He is glorious;
Never shall His promise fail;
God hath made His saints victorious,
Sin and death shall not prevail.

4. Praise the God of our salvation, Hosts on high His power proclaim; Heaven and earth, and all creation, Laud and magnify His name! Hallelujah, Amen.

*Repeat the last two lines.
