CHAPTER I.

METRICAL SYSTEM OF WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.

In England, you know, we have in general use various weights, such as Avoirdupois weight, Hay and Straw weight, Wool weight, Troy weight, Apothecaries' weight, and other weights peculiar to particular districts; we have, too, the common Long measure, with varieties applied to the measurement of cloth, to the measurement of horses, to the sounding of oceans and to other things. For the measurement of liquids, we have the Imperial measure, Wine measure, Ale and Beer measure, Apothecaries' fluid measure, and others. For wine, the contents of the pipe varies with the different kinds of wine. For solids we have cubic measure, with variations applicable to rough and hewn timber respectively. There are English acres, Scotch acres, and Irish acres. A hundredweight may mean a hundred pounds, a hundred and twelve pounds, or a hundred and twenty pounds; a stone may mean eight pounds or fourteen pounds; a dozen consists sometimes of thirteen and sometimes of twelve.
