Field stalk cutting machine, Long, Black & Alstetter, recommended as being worthy of patronage.

Combined grain drill and grass sower, Thos Mast & Co., the committee think worthy of notice-particularly the arrangement of the grass seed sower.

JAMES MYERS,
E. PETERS.

The following cuts represent something new and novel. The first is known as "Scarlett's Eagle Corn and Cob Mill," which is entirely different, in economy and construction, from either the "Little Giant," "Star Mill," "Excelsior Young America," or any other heretofore introduced, it being larger, heavier,

stronger, more durable, requires less power to do the same work, and is especially adapted to grinding all kinds of shelled grain, corn meal, &c., as well as corn and cob, to any degree of fineness. It has taken the first premiums as "best farm mill," at Ohio State Fairs, both in 1859 and 1860.

[graphic][subsumed][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

The second cut represents the same mill, with "Van Liew's Gear" attached, adapting it to the large farmer, miller, &c., by attaching it to a threshing horse power, or to any other power, by belt or gear. It has crushed from 30 to 40 bushels per hour, with speed increased only two and a half times more than the above sweep mill.

One of the above mills was given, last summer, by Mr. Van Liew, to the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, to offer as a premium for the best Essay on advantages of feeding ground feed-including corn and cob ground together-to horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, &c.; which premium is awarded to Maurice A. Mot, and is published herein (see page 97).

C. D. WOODRUFF,
N. H. HARR,

A. C. BENEDICT.

I have examined entry No. 1, horizontal pump, made by Peter Schenck, and find it has a great deal of power, and think it may work very satisfactorily on enlargement. I therefore recommend it favorably to the Board. It claims many advantages over other water drawers.

Your committee find the display of plows unusually large and fine; so much so, that it is very difficult to decide which is the best for the purpose intended. Your committee further think, that if we could have had a test-day for plows, it might have changed their decisions in some particular; yet under the circumstances they have done the best in their power.

We further remark, that the plows exhibited by Mr. Hawthorne of Dayton, possess many excellent qualities, and found it very difficult to decide between them and other plows to which premiums were awarded. Also the plows exhibited and manufactured by S. Horney & Co., Richmond, Indiana, and J. F. Dane & Co., Springfield, O.

We also highly recommend a shovel plow, manufactured by N. J. Augey, Dayton, Ohio. C. SMITH.
