THE NORTH DOOR

HIS ENEMY.

By Greville MacDonald.

The Pall Mall Gazette :

"The story holds its interest for the reader throughout."

The Illustrated London News :-
"A strangely fascinating book."

The Observer :

"The imagination in the book is splendidly high-soaring; the vision is clear.'

"A very good story."

Swathed in white clothing that the bravest dread,
Young Lazarus' body in the dark tomb lay,
Earth back to earth, the heavy, lifeless clay.
Four days his sisters wept the darling dead,
No more to labour for their wine and bread.
But One now cries: "Come forth into the day,
O Man for Death is broke, bonds cast away,
The sun is risen, the bats and clouds have fled!"

As this old story down the stairway rings
And gives dull crysalids red flaming wings

To break through cere-cloth, shroud,-poor mouldy things!
So I, since bidden forth my narrow grave

By your exultant voice, O Comrade brave,

No more am bound old Custom's coward slave !
