The duties named in the third column will apply after July 5. From last Monday, May 7, according to the resolution of the House of Commons passed on that day, the existing duties will be charged up to July 5, with an addition of 15 per cent. thereto.

The consumption of sugar in the last year of the various qualities and classes, was as follows:

283,000 tons of colonial sugar paying the 10s. duty.

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][ocr errors][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small]

The consumption is still steadily increasing-that of the first three months of the year showing an increase of nearly 4,000 tons upon last year. It is probable, therefore, that the consumption of this year may be about 400,000 tons, and that it will consist of:

100,000 tons of brown sugars at the low duty of 11s.

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

400,000 tons total, including molasses.

* Should this Act be passed in time, the Sugar Duties will be given in ADDENDA.

continued.

Thus, from this time until July 5, the duties will be the same as at present, with 15 per cent. added upon all rates alike, and from July 5 the new duties will take effect.-Economist, May 13, 1854.

SAMPLES OF CLAYED SUGAR.

For facilitating the due assessment of duties on white-clayed sugar, or sugar rendered by any process equal to white-clayed, with reference to colour, grain, and saccharine matter, and on brown-clayed sugar, or sugar rendered by any process equal in quality to brown-clayed sugar, the Commissioners of Customs shall provide and renew, from time to time, samples of white-clayed and brown-clayed sugar respectively, which shall be deemed to be standard samples, for the purpose of comparing therewith sugars entered for home comsumption; and no sugar shall, as regards the payment of duty, be deemed to be white-clayed sugar, or sugar rendered by any process equal to white-clayed sugar, unless equal to the standard sample of white-clayed sugar, or be deemed to be brownclayed sugar, or sugar rendered by any process equal to brown-clayed sugar, unless equal to the standard sample of brown-clayed sugar.-16 & 17 Vict. c. 106, § 3. Aug. 20, 1853.

[SUPPLY AND PRICES.

There has been no increase in the quantity of tallow imported between the three years 1840-2 and 1851-3, the average of the former three years having been 1,151,437 cwt. and of the latter 1,149,713 cwt. Betwixt 1848 and 1850, of which we have details, the supply from Russia fell off from 1,049,157 cwtsto 854,144 cwt. to 810,449 cwt. in 1851, and was in 1852 and 1853 respectively 609,197 cwt. and 847,267 cwt. In this last year it must be remembered that high prices and an apprension of war have brought hither an unusual quantity. but in the three years 1840-2, the average quantity of palm and cocoanut oil imported was 424,101 cwt. and in the three years 1851-3, 697,015 cwt. -Economist, April 1, 1854.

The letters from St. Petersburgh to-day do not fully confirm the statements in some of the previous advices regarding the probable export of tallow. It is admitted that from 100,000 to 110,000 casks are likely to be received, but it is added that only under the most favourable circumstances could half that quantity be sent away, while the general calculation, looking at the means for transport, are, that the total will not exceed from 20,000 to 30,000 casks. -Times May 13, 1854. £ s. d. COURT OF QUEEN'S BENCH, THURSDAY, MAY 18, 1854.

(Sittings at Nisi Prius, at Guildhall, before Lord CAMPBELL and Common Juries.)

FROST V. TURNOR.

Mr. Serjeant Shee and Mr. R. E. Turner appeared for the plaintiff; and Mr. Serjeant Wilkins and Mr. J. Wilde for the defendant.

This was an action of trover, to recover the value of certain barrels of tar deposited in the warehouse of the defendant, and which had not been delivered to the plaintiff. The defendant denied that he ever had possession of the tar. The plaintiff, James John Frost, was a ropemaker at Shadwell, and had been in the habit of having tar landed for him at Whiting's-wharf, in Broad-street, Ratcliffe, it was then usually rolled over the wharf to a bonded warehouse on the opposite side of the street, the proprietor of the warehouse paying for permission to take goods over the wharf, and his manager was a Mr. Higgs. The plaintiff usually sent to the warehouse for the tar as wanted, by an order directed to Higgs. In the latter end of 1852 the warehouse was sold to the defendant, who was a Cooper. He endeavoured to let the warehouse, not being a wharfinger; and Higgs, whom he supposed to be doing business on his own account, saying he should lose his business if turned out directly, got permission from the defendant to remain for a short time until the place should be let. It appeared that Higgs then issued cards in his own name, but these the plaintiff had not seen. 500 barrels of Stockholm tar had been warehoused for the plaintiff, and all but 163 had been obtained from Higgs in the usual way, by an order directed to him. On sending for these 163 barrels, the plaintiff found them gone-only 7 were in the warehouse, and Higgs was nowhere to be met with. This action was then brought against the defendant, treating him as the principal, and Higgs as his manager. It was objected that these facts did not establish a liability on the part of the defendant. The plaintiff was nonsuited.

DELIVERIES AND STOCK.

The falling off of 1,517,103lb. is solely attributable to the suspensien of purchases pending the large reduction of duty which took place at the beginning of the present month. From the date of that reduction up to the 12th inst. duty was paid upon 3,143,047 lb., representing an amount of 230,7287., which has since been considerably augmented.

London, April 24, 1854.

The week's deliveries of tea in London have been 957,3291b. The stock of tea in London on the 16th inst. was 53,728,000lb., and at Liverpool 8,668,000lb., against 45,371,000lb. and 13,924,000lb. respectively, at the corresponding date of last year.

The public sales were brought to a conclusion on Monday; the improvement last reported being generally maintained. Of the total quantity submitted, 42,802 pkgs, about 23 to 25,000 pkgs. sold in the room, besides a good many parcels placed by private contract. The market has since been quiet, with very little business passing in most descriptions, and arrivals are still large. The stock on 1st instant for the United Kingdom was 68,044,000 lb. against 66,035,000 lb. last year.-Economist, May 13, 1854.
