A READING OF EARTH. By George Meredith. -A collection of twenty verses and seven epitaphs. The poems are: Seed-time, Hard Weather, The South-western, The Thrush in February, The Appeasement of Demeter, Earth and a Wedded Woman, Mother to Babe, Woodland Peace, The Question Whither, Outer and Inner, Nature and Life, Dirge in Woods, A Faith on Trial, Change in Recurrence, Hymn to Color, Meditation under Stars, Woodman and Echo, The Wisdom of Eld, Earth's Preference, Society, and Winter Heavens. Among the epitaphs are one on Gordon and one on Emperor Frederick. —Macmillan, 1.50. RUN DOWN. A Novel by George D. Cox.Dr. Corliss, the intimate friend of William Fano, a catholic priest in New Orleans, is struck by the moods of melancholy which seize upon his friend more frequently as the days go by. Fano hints at a mysterious enemy who persecutes him relentlessly, but the physician thinks he discovers symptoms of insanity. He is, however, forced to reject this theory, as Fano shows him daily new proofs of his secret persecutor's fiendish enmity. The doctor resolves to clear up the mystery and find the culprit. He engages a detective who in a short while obtains some curious information about Fano.-Peterson, .25. THE SELDENS IN CHICAGO.-Having lost his modest fortune, Mr. Selden, a man past middle age, is obliged to go to America with his only daughter Marjory. He finds employment in the offices of his brother, a wholesale merchant in Chicago, but after the latter's death is forced to leave by his sister-in-law, who wishes her eldest son to be the only master. On a visit to her cold, unsympathetic aunt, Marjory makes the acquaintance of Mr. Dean, a gentleman from Boston who is supposed to be a suitor for the hand of the eldest daughter of the house. Shortly afterwards Marjory's father goes to New York on business, and on his return finds his daughter engaged.-Brentano's, .50. THE SON OF A STAR. By Benjamin Ward Richardson.-Hadrian, the Roman Caesar, while visiting his dominions in Britain observes in the circus a young Hebrew, designed to become a prey to the wolves. He feels a mysterious sympathy for the youth who claims to be under the direct protection of the God of Abraham. The scenes of the story are subsequently laid in Egypt and Palestine, where the Son of a Star becomes the leader of a revolt against the Roman oppressors, and successfully leads his men against the legions of the Emporer who has been his friend and benefactor.— Longmans, Green, 1.50. Latest French Books. FRANCAIS ET ALLEMANDS. Par Dick de Lonlay, Vol. IV.-The writer gives in this volume which is dedicated to Marshall Canrobert, the commander-in-chief of the 6th Army Corps of the Rhine during the Franco-German War, a detailed account of the murderous battle of Saint-Privat. The 17th and 18th of August, 1870, are lived through again by this old warrior, who shows to the world against what enormous odds the French were struggling, and how their position was weakened by the inactivity of Bazaine. He demonstrates to his countrymen that the French soldiers, though defeated, showed themselves superior to their adversaries in courage and power of endurance, and that the history of the great war of 1870-1871 contains brilliant pages of French heroism. Numerous maps and sketches by the author illustrate the text.-Brentano's, 1.25. CONTES RAPIDES. Par Francois Coppée.Twelve tales by the French poet, which bear the impression of coming age, its regrets and lost opportunities very strongly in their rather sombre tone. The tales are: L'Invitation au Sommeil, Le Numéro du Regiment, L'Orgue de Barbarie, Le Convalescent, Oeuvres Posthumes, A Table, Les Pommes cuites, Lettres d'Amour, Marriages Manqués, Jalousie, Fille de Tristesse, Les Sabots du Petit Wolff. Of these, Lettres d'Amour is the most remarkable in conception: it tells the story of a young, worthless poet who publishes the love-letters of the woman whom he has basely deceived as his own work, and by their aid makes a name for himself as a powerful writer of passion. L' Invitation au Sommeil, the opening sketch is also very attractive.-Brentano's, 1.25. EN ASIE CENTRALE à LA VAPEUR. Notes de Voyage par Napoléon Ney.-The narrative of a trip to the Black Sea, the Crimea, Caucasus, Caspian Sea, Merv, Bokhara and Samarcand. The author does not confine himself to ethnography and geography, but pays special attention to the advance of Russia in Asia and its attitude towards England. He describes at length the Siberian and Asiatic railroads, and mingles a great amount of political discussion in his interesting narrative. He has his little fling at Germany as is only natural in a French writer, and declares that country to be a perpetual menace to Europe. The volume contains a preface by Pierre Véron, and is illustrated by Dick de Lonlay. Two maps and an appendix.— Brentano's, 1.25. LE PRINCE LOUIS BONAPARTE ET SA FAMILLE. -A biographical study of the younger brother of the French Emperor, giving a short review of the remarkable period in history during which the son of the Corsican lawyer made himself master of Europe. A series of "Notices Biographiques" on Charles Bonaparte, Laetitia, Joseph, Paul-Marie, Jeanne, Louis, Lucien, Pierre-Napoleon, Antoine, Marie Alexandrine, and Constance form the second part, while a collection of "pièces justificatives" forms the third part. These references are of widely different character, and range from the certificate of birth of Lucien Bonaparte to descriptions of the system of government in Paris during Napoleon's absence, clippings from contemporary newspapers, letters to the Emperor, etc. Twelve portraits of members of the house of Bonaparte are added to the volume.-Brentano's, 5.25. HISTOIRE DU PEUPLE D'ISRAEL. Par Ernest Renan, Vol. II.-In the second volume of his history of the Jewish people, Mr. Renan demonstrates how Iahve, the national god of Israel, becomes the Ruler of the Universe. Beginning with David and his government, he discusses the latter's organization of the army, his wars, etc., then takes up his successor, and demonstrates that Salomon never was what he is now considered to have been, a mighty ruler to whom the whole then-known world looked in admiration, but simply the luxurious tyrant of an unimportant, uncivilized tribe. He then turns to the two kingdoms into which the people divided themselves after Salomo's death, and discourses in his best style about Jewish literature, the prophets, the influence of Assyria on Israel, etc -Brentano's, 2.60. SOUVENIRS INTIMES DE LA COUR DES TUILERIES. Par Madame Carette.-The information which Madame Carette gives is chiefly of a personal character: she does not make political revelations, nor does she attempt to deny or affirm the many stories about the Empress Eugenie which have been current so long. She draws an idealistic picture of her imperial mistress, ascribing to her all the virtues a woman can possess, and discourses with enthusiasm about her beauty, grace, and kindness. Very little is said about the Emperor or the prince imperial, but all the members of the Maison de l'Imperatrice pass before the reader. Court balls and the private life of the Empress, her predilections and tastes, and numerous other subjects are discussed in what might be called an unceasing flow of very interesting small talk.-Brentano's, 1.25.
