THE BOOK OF THE YEAR!

The Romance of an Alter Ego.

By LLOYD BRYCE.

12MO. PAPER, 50 CENTS. CLOTH, $1.00.

The intricate plot of the story is cleverly thought out, and developed with studious care, holding the interest of the reader until the last page, and bringing him face to face with those conditions of contemporary life and civilization, which grow daily darker in aspect, and begin to change the interest which economists have taken in them thus far, into serious apprehension of what the near future has in store. A clever use is made in the unfolding of the story of the latest discoveries of Doctor Charcot, and other students of mesmerism and hypnotism.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

"There are many clever chapters in the book, and the events of contemporaneous human interest are treated in a peculiarly graphic way.

. . For the class of readers interested in psychological research, the Romance of an Alter Ego' will be welcome. Mr. Bryce has written a capital story. The task of a storyteller must be considered successful if the reader is held interested to the end of the book."-New York World.

'One series of exciting incidents from beginning to end."-Morning Journal.

"That the book will find thousands of readers there is scarcely a doubt."

-Utica Morning Herald.

"The Romance of an Alter Ego' will doubtless prove one of the volumes of lighter fiction the most in demand this summer. To say the least, it is an entertaining story from beginning to end.-Boston Times.

"A novel of a good deal of originality and cleverness of execution.... The story is quite original in its construction, cleverly and naturally woven together.... the swift, lively, and lifelike way in which it is written."

-Chicago Times.

"Will be widely read as much for the real merit of the story as of its novel character."

-Daily Telegraph, Harrisburgh, Penn.

"The author's style is vivacious and the plot is a good one, cleverly handled. It is evidently the work of a wide-awake man of the day whose main object—to entertain—has been ably accomplished.-St. Louis Republican.

"A romance, truly, and, viewed as a romance, excellent of its kind. The scenes are exciting, the tale well told, the plot sufficiently intricate, and the characters individual and marked..... The book is very well written, and the motive is strongly put before the reader."

-New York Truth.

"A queer jumble, but the mixture effervesces in a strange, uncanny, and lively manner-the erratic play of fancy of a man of imagination and daring.-Baltimore Sun.

"It is a well-written book. Its plot is not conventional and is excellent. It is full of action and incident. It holds constantly the reader's interest..... 'Tis a book to read, and to think about after.-Duluth Evening Herald.

"It is a relief to turn from the shoals of unreadable trash .... and to take up a book which must make its mark, and which indeed, will probably create a sensation..... Will be eagerly welcomed by all who desire to peruse a wellconstructed and well-written story." -Town Topics

What Note Paper are You Using?

[ocr errors]

There is nothing that so definitely distinguishes the refinement, taste and character of a person as the paper he writes on."

CRANE'S AND HURD'S Papers are now acknowledged to be the best made. We have superior connections with these celebrated manufacturers that enable us to place before our patrons their leading papers.

The better to enable you to make your selections we have published a tasty little Sample Book of over sixty kinds of Paper both Hurd's and Crane's that we will send free of cost to any one upon application.

For ladies use, the Crane's Distaff will attract attention. We think it is the best linen paper made in the world. We have it in all sizes-also in the little wee Notes so fashionable at present.

Do you prefer a high finished Smooth Surface Note Paper? If so we can highly recommend Crane's Extra Superfine Paper-both Wove and Laid finishes. These papers are considered finer than the English-the better classes now prefer them.

You all know how fatiguing it is to write on some makes of paper. Try Hurds Linen Cloth paper and you will find it a pleasure to write on. Persons subject to writer cramp,' should use Linen Cloth. It is a Stylish Paper besides. Try it and you will thank us for calling your attention to it.

For a Rough Surface Paper there is nothing that equals Crane's Grecian Antique. It is made from the finest fibre, Crane's Watermark being in every sheet.

Hurd's Cluny Linen, Pyramid Linen, and Crinoline Linen are also superior rough surface papers. They are all in our little sample book.

What a grand paper is Parchment Vellum. It is made by the Cranes-so solid and stocky. The highest grade linen rags used only in its manufacture -just the paper for a professional man. We have it in two tints, cream and

azure.

We must not forget to call your attention to Crane's Bond Papers-you all know them. Their thin Bank Note crispness and strong, tough fibre-they have a genuine look. Such a paper as you would expect a Banker or person of means to write on.

Hurd's Hand Made Paper is too, one of the best papers made. It has a rich hard surface. There are two tints of it, Cream and Azure.

One of the prettiest papers of our collection is the Hurd's Wicker. Its delicate water-lined pattern serves for lines to guide the writing and yet has not the vulgarity of ruled paper. Hurd's Wicker is a great favorite.

For light Linen Papers use Hurd's Egyptian Linen. It ranks high and is splendid for office use.

Our little book contains two Samples of Engraving from which to order plate and visiting cards. It has also a page of all the widths of Black Bordering, so that those wishing Mourning Paper can order intelligently. With one of these little Books, you can have always by you a safe guide when ordering your stationery.
