A RIDE ON A CYCLONE. By William Hosea Ballou. Illustrations by H. Clay Coultaus.— Baron Franz Porzig, a Western cattle raiser, awakes one morning on the roof of the private residence of Mr. de Land, where he has been deposited during the night by the cyclone which completely ruined the buildings on his ranch. The baron is introduced by his host to Mrs. de Land and their only daughter. The characters in the book are all impersonations of well known Americans: Levi P. Morton, Cornelius Vanderbilt, August Belmont, Ward McAllister, Jay Gould, P. D. Armour, S. W. Allerton, Nelson Morris, N. K. Fairbank, and of course Chauncey M. Depew.-Belford Clarke & Co., .50.

A SAGE OF SIXTEEN. By L. B. Walford. The Sage of Sixteen is Elma Alfreton, the orphaned child of Sir Thomas Alfreton's younger brother. According to her father's last wish, she has not been taken into her uncle's family, but been sent to the boarding-school of Miss Exeter, whose house she leaves each Wednesday to pass the afternoon in the palatial residence of her relatives and to amuse her nephew and niece-both older by some years than she-with her remarks and happy mean. Piers, her nephew, begins to grow interested in the innocent young girl.-Holt & Co., 1.00.

THE TWO GREAT RETREATS OF HISTORY, With Introductions and Notes. "Classics for Children."-The two retreats contained in this volume are: I. Grote's account of the Retreat of the Ten Thousand Greeks, taken from his History of Greece, II. an abridgement of Ségur's narrative of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. Grote's history, based on Xenophon's Anabasis, is given entire, with the exception that in a few instances some slight verbal change has been made in order to better adapt the work to school use. Two maps are furnished, an introduction is prefixed to each selection, and all needed notes are subjoined.-Ginn & Co.

THREE DAYS. A Mid-Summer Love-Story. By Samuel Williams Cooper. Illustrated.—A seaside episode in which Morris Ashton, an impecunious young New Yorker, and Catherine Forbes, a young, unsophisticated Southern girl, play the principal roles. Ashton loves Catherine and her soft womanly ways, but the necessity of making a very rich match becomes more and more pressing, and he engages himself to a rich young woman, writing to Catherine who has tried to aid him in his struggle with the world, "I have broken the faith, I have fled from the fight." The closing chapter of the story is touchingly written. Though the plot is not new, the tale is exceedingly interesting.— Lippincott, 1.00.

THREE TIMES TRIED. By B. E. Farjeon, and Other Stories.-Besides the story of John Plumridge, the blind old soldier who resisted temptation three times and saved the life of his successful rival, to find at last that his noble behaviour becomes the instrument which secures the happiness of his son, the book contains: A Terrible Inheritance, by Grant Allen, By Telegraph, by J. Maclaren Cobban, For Dick's Sake, by Mrs. Riddell, Slipping Away; or, the Price of a Tale, by Austen Pember, and Lord John; or, a Search for Gold, by Manville Fenn.-Crowell & Co., 1.00.

TWO SIDES OF A STORY. By George Parsons Lathrop.-Martin Updike, a young lawyer in a small city, is sent to Kansas to represent a firm of wholesale dry goods dealers that had been defrauded by a clever swindler, who had evidently flown to Canada with his equally guilty wife. Updike is unsuccessful, and when he returns finds his native city in great excitement over a handsome young widow who has just settled there and seems to have much money. The other sketches are: Oley Grow's Daughter, Captain Billy, Mrs. Winterrowd's Musicale, Unfinished, March and April, Raising Cain, and a Market Wagon.-Cassell, .50.

UNCLE PETER'S TRUST; OR, FOLLOWING THE DRUMS. By George B. Perry. Illustrated.— Joe, the little waif whom Uncle Peter, the coxswain of an English Channel life-boat's crew, has rescued from the sea, secretes himself in the bow of the life-boat one stormy night and thus saves the life of a little baby whom the sudden lurch of the foundering vessel has torn from its mother's hands and thrown in the sea. Mrs. Benton and her husband, the colonel, wish to show their gratitude to Uncle Peter and his valiant crew and especially to little Joe, whose greatest ambition in life is to become a soldier. -Harper's, 1.00.

VERE; THE LEADING LADY. By One of the Profession. Shortly after announcing a new play, the manager of a London theatre receives the unwelcome news that his leading lady has fallen sick and will not be able to play for four months. In his despair the manager addresses himself to Augustine St. Mar, an influential young critic, who introduces him to Vere Cassilis, a rising actress whom St. Mar proudly claims to have discovered. Vere always acts in a constrained way when with St. Mar, but tells him the reason of this when the Marquis de Frontignac claims her as his wife.-Rand, McNally & Co., .25.

By

WIELAND; OR, THE TRANSFORMATION. Charles Brockden Brown. "American Classics Series."-This work, with Arthur Mervyn, also published in the same form, belongs among the best works of fiction produced by American genius. Brown's works occupy an important place in the history of American literature, and the present issue of his works-for Ormond, Edgar Huntly, Clara Howard, and Jane Talbot will undoubtedly follow-should be heartily welcomed. His political essays, and especially those on the Cession of Louisiana to France," and on "the Treaty with England rejected by Mr. Jefferson," also deserve fully to be included in the series. A memoir of Brown prefaces Wieland.-D. McKay, Philada., 1.00, each.

WORDS ON WELLINGTON. By Sir William Fraser, Baronet, M. A.-This work contains only personal recollections of the author and facts about the Duke related to him by what he considered excellent authorities. The volume is divided into three parts: The Duke-Waterloo-The Ball, the latter part being devoted to the duchess of Richmond's ball at Brussels on June 15, 1815, the night before the battle of Quatre-Bras, and especially to the location of the house and the apartments where the ball took place. Mr. Fraser claims to have discovered this ball-room. Index.-Brentano's, 3.00.
