THE BANKSIDE SHAKESPEARE.

THE

The great text freed from gossip, hearsay, and the guesswork

of commentators.

HE BANKSIDE SHAKESPEARE is published by the NEW YORK SHAKESPEARE SOCIETY on an entirely novel plan. It contains the text of the earliest version of each play printed in the lifetime of Shakespeare, paralleled with the 1623 or First Folio Text, both texts being numbered line by line and scrupulously collated with both the Folio and Quarto Texts. The edition reproduces all the antique and pedantic ornaments of the Quartos and Folios; numbers consecutively every line, whether speech, stage direction, exit or entrance; copies every typographical slip, misplaced punctuation, error in orthography, or inverted letter in both texts, and even gives the precise "justification" of the lines of each version to the widths of the original pages.

Nothing purer or more richly elaborate has ever appeared from an American press than these Banksides, with their rubricated titles, laid paper, clear-cut letter-press, and brilliant ink. Certainly, no such loving care has ever been bestowed upon Shakespeare before. Every line, or exit, entrance, or stage direction of less than a line, is numbered twice, and at intervals three times, that the reader's eye may at once identify each word or phrase in either edition, as well as trace the manipulations or variations given it by their author. That a work like the Bankside edition should have emanated from American scholars, and its critical and careful typography from an American press, are matters to be proud of. But, while the texts are thrice collated-twice by consecutive notation, and once tabulated (each Bankside line being referred to a Quarto "signature"-the quartos being unpaged-and to the Folio line, column and page)-the Introductions are intended to be the result of the personal and special study of each play by the members, and for which each member is particularly and personally responsible, the responsibility of the Society as a unit extending only to the scrupulous accuracy of the reproduced texts.

Press Reviews.

"The reproduction of the old texts so far as we have verified it, is absolutely accurate; and it is a great convenience to the student to have the two texts put side by side. No collation of foot notes can make the points of agreement and disagreement so clear and impressive. The system of line numbering is due to a committee appointed by the New York Shakespeare Society, and seems perfectly adapted to the purpose."-Prof. W. J. ROLFE, in The Literary World.

"That a work like the Bankside edition should have eman ated from American scholars, and its critical and careful typography from an American press, are matters to be proud of."-The Item, Philadelphia.

"As Americans we ought to be proud of the Bankside Shakespeare.-R. H. STODDARD.

"The Bankside Shakespeare is commending itself to all lovers and students of the great dramatist as one of the most valuable editions which has yet appeared."-The Christian Union, New York.

"The Bankside Edition entirely disposes of the Donnelly Cipher. It prints the earliest Shakespeare text side by side with the 1623 text, thus showing at a glance the mutations, augmentations, and curtailments which the plays underwent, during their first stage life, at the hands of literary pirates, stage censors and careless printers, and in the mouths of the actors, thus rendering it at once apparent that in neither text could a cipher be found to-day by an exact mathematical process, even had one been originally concealed therein."Chicago Inter-Ocean.

"The New York Shakespeare Society is putting forth an edition of Shakespeare-the Bankside-which contributes greatly to the fascination of Shakespearean study. Nothing could be more interesting to a lover of Shakespeare than to see the very words on which the eyes of the great poet rested during his lifetime; to read them as he framed them before the demands of his better taste and stage necessities had caused them to be changed."-The Chicago Evening Journal Editorial.

THE BANKSIDE SHAKESPEARE will be complete in 20 volumes, of which 6 are ready. The remaining 14 volumes will be published at short intervals, insuring the early completion of the work.

CONDITIONS OF PUBLICATION.

Each play is printed separately, de luxe, in the best style of the Riverside Press, on laid paper, uncut, boards.
