PREFACE

The papers on Botany and Geology do not pretend to be comprehensive treatises ; they are introduced in the hope that they may incite a wish to acquire further knowledge from more elaborate works. Permission to make extracts from Jukes' School Manual of Geology was kindly granted by the Trustees and Messrs. Black of Edinburgh.

The chapters from Blackstone are intended to draw the attention of School Managers to the desirability (we may perhaps say necessity), in these days, of giving Pupil Teachers and the Upper Classes in Schools some instruction on the most important points in the constitution and laws of their country.

It is recommended that the extracts from the Criticisms on Paradise Lost be read with the Poem.

The specimens from modern authors do not range over the whole period of “Modern English.” For Prose it was thought that a good starting point would be about the time of the Authorised Translation of the Bible ; while for Poetry, it seemed right to go back sufficiently far to include Shakespeare. The extracts from Macaulay are inserted by permission of Messrs. Longman.

No attempt has been made to simplify the style of the various authors, and this book will be best understood by the aid of that without which no real student ever reads-a thoroughly good Dictionary.
