LANGUAGE LESSONS PART ONE BY ROBERT C. METCALF SUPERVISOR OF SCHOOLS, BOSTON, MASS. AND ORVILLE T. BRIGHT SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, COOK COUNTY, ILL. NEW YORK.:. CINCINNATI .:. CHICAGO Edice T 758,94,613 ✓ NARVARD COLLEGE LIBRARY GINN AND COMPANY DEC. 26, 1923 AUTHORS' NOTE. THIS work consists of the first part of Metcalf and Bright's Language Exercises, interspersed with much new matter adapted to the needs of a younger class of pupils. It has been prepared for the purpose of assisting teachers in the presentation of exercises which shall furnish the pupils with suitable opportunities for practice in talking and writing. These exercises have been made so simple that any teacher of ordinary ability will find no difficulty in using them. At the same time, they are sufficiently difficult to call out and strengthen the pupil's powers, and lead him to think as well as to express his thought. Many simple poems have been given to be read and committed to memory and occasionally to be studied, for the purpose of interesting the pupil in poetic forms, thus preparing the way for a more extended study of poetic literature in the higher grades of the schools. The selections from Holmes, Longfellow, Lowell, Whittier, and the Cary sisters are used by permission of and arrangement with Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Company, and those from Bryant by permission of Messrs. D. Appleton & Co. A full list of the publications containing the works of the same authors may be found on page 160.
