Excerpt from Graded Lessons in English for Italians: An Aid in Americanization

Metodo Teorico Practico della Lingua Inglese. With slight modification the contents of this first edition now forms the second and third parts. The first part has been added to simplify the Method in such a way that even those who are illiterate may use it as a primer.

In the word list of the first part of the book it has been deemed necessary to add the transliteration of every word used to enable the learner to read the lesson when he is not with the teacher. The pronunciation of the English language is so difficult that one is liable to forget how to pronounce certain words even after he has read them a few times under the direction of the teacher. Though the exact transliteration of any language can never be properly rendered, yet it helps the pupil in the task of pronouncing difficult words.

The second part of the book contains twenty conversations on familiar and useful topics. They tend to familiarize the pupil with easy and common every day expressions which he needs in his daily life. Through these conversations the learner will be able to read English fairly well and know a large number of words before he begins to study the rules of grammar, which, however easy and comprehensible they may be, will always be a heavy burden for the beginner to bear.
