PSALMS XXIII AND XXIV.

The Selections for the Ninth and the Tenth Days, A. M.

COM

For Christmas.

ISAIAH XL, XLII.

your

God.

YOMFORT ye, comfort ye my people, saith Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is par doned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low:

And the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.

[ocr errors]

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand forever.

(Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain:

O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength: lift up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Juda, Behold your God!

Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold his reward is with him, and his work before him.

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather

the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth;

I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

A

Additional Selection for Easter or Christmas.

From Psalms and Isaiah.

LL the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord, and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee:

For the kingdom is the Lord's, and he is the Governor among the nations.

Send forth thy light and thy truth, O Lord: let them lead us to thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacle, even unto God, our exceeding joy.

Thou wilt show us the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy at thy right hand there are pleasures for

evermore.

Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens, and thy faithfulness is above the clouds. Thy righteousness is like the great mountains: thy judgments are a great deep.

How excellent is thy loving-kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the blessing of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

Thy mercy, O Lord, endureth forever, and thy memorial throughout all generations.

We will bless the Lord from this time forth, and forever

more.

Whom have we in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that we desire beside thee.

HE Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort, all her

Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord:

Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

For the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

And in this mountain shall the Lord of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations.

He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces;

And the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.

FOR HOLY DAYS.

The Nativity of our Lord, or the Birthday of CHRIST, commonly called

Christmas-Day.

¶ At Morning or Evening Prayer, this Collect may be read.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us thy only begotten Son to take

our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure virgin; grant that we may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee, world without end. Amen. Eph. iii. 1.

The Epistles: Heb. i. 1.

The Gospels St. John, i.

1. St. Matt. 1. 18. St. Matt. ii. 1.

Good Friday.

At Morning or Evening Prayer, these Collects may be read.

LMIGHTY God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross, who now liveth and reigneth with thee, world without end. Amen.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the church is governed and sanctified; receive our supplications and prayers, which we offer before thee for all estates of men in thy holy church, that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may truly and godly serve thee; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

MERCIFUL God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that thou hast made, nor desirest the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live; have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Heretics; and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of thy word and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to thy flock, that they may be saved among the

remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one Shep. herd, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle: Heb. x. 1.

The Gospel St. John xix. 1.

Easter-Day.

At Morning Prayer, instead of the Psalm, O, come let us sing, etc. these Anthems shall be sung or said.

CHR

HRIST our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast;

Not with the old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Cor. v. 7.

CHRIST being raised from the dead, dieth no more; death hath no

more dominion over him.

For in that he died, he died unto sin once, but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. vi. 9.

CHRIST is risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them

that slept.

For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Cor. xv. 20.

THE COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY God, who through thine only begotten Son Jesua

Christ hast overcome death, and opened unto us the gate of everlasting life; we humbly beseech thee, that, as by thy special grace preventing us, thou dost put into our minds good desires, so by thy continual help we may bring the same to good effect; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, world without end. Amen.

The Ascension-Day.

RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that like as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend,
