LET US PRAY.

The Collect.

GOD, whose blessed Son was manifested that He might destroy the works of the devil, and make us the sons of God, and heirs of eternal life; Grant us, we beseech Thee, that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves, even as He is pure; that when He shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like unto Him in His eternal and glorious kingdom; where with Thee, O Father, and Thee, O Holy Ghost, He liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who, of Thy

tender love towards mankind, hast sent Thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon Him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the example of His great humility; Mercifully grant, that we may both follow the example of His patience, and also be made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

AND

S. Luke xxii. 41.

ND He was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down and prayed, saying, Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless, not my will, but Thine be done. And there appeared an angel unto Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in an agony, He prayed more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest

nothing that Thou hast made, and dost for

give the sins of all them that are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of Thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father. (Ps. li. i.) Have mercy upon me, O God, after Thy great goodness; according to the multitude of Thy mercies do away mine offences. (ten times). O Saviour of the world who by Thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us, Save us and help us we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord.

2. THE SCOURGING.

Is. 1. 6.

I GAVE my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

GR

The Collect.

RANT, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of Thy grace may mereifully be relieved; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Our Father. (Ps, li. 2.)

Wash me thoroughly

from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sins; for I acknowledge my faults, and my sins is ever before me (ten times.) O Saviour of the world, &c.

3. THE CROWN OF THORNS.

S. Mark xv. 16..

AND ND the soldiers led Him away into the hall, called Prætorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed Him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about His head and began to salute Him, Hail King of the Jews. And they smote Him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon Him, and bowing their knees worshipped Him.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ, who didst suffer Thy well beloved Son to be set at naught and mocked of sinful men, grant unto us such gentleness and meekness that we may bear without resentment every wrong done unto us; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father. (S. Mark xv. 18; Ps. li. 7.) Hail, King of the Jews, who shall purge me with hyssop that I shall be clean, who shall wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow (ten times.) O Saviour, &c.

AND ND Pilate saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? answered, We have no king but livered he Him therefore unto them to be crucified: and they took Jesus, and led Him away. And he, bearing His cross, went forth into a place called the place a scull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha.

The Collect.

ETERNAL God, whose most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ went forth, like Isaac, bearing the word of the sacrifice, to the mount of crucifixion; give us grace so to bear those crosses Thou seest fit to lay upon us, that we fall not under them through excess of weakness, nor cast them aside through impatience of the flesh. This we ask for the same Thy Son, Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Our Father. (Gal. vi. 14.) God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; therefore turn Thy face from my sins, and put out all my misdeeds (ten times.) O Saviour, &c.
