Ziklag given to David.

I. Samuel.

of Saul: there is nothing better for me, than that I fhould speedily escape into the land of the Philiftines; and Saul fhall defpair of me, to feek me any more in any coafts of Ifrael: fo fhall I escape out of his hand.

2 And David arofe, and he paffed over with the fix hundred men that were with him, unto Achifh the son of Maoch king of Gath.

3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his houfhold, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitefs, and Abigail the Carmelitefs Nabals wife.

4 And it was told Saul that David was fed to Gath: and he fought no more again for him.

5

And David faid unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in fome town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why fhould thy fervant dwell in the royal city with thee?

6 Then Achifh gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philiftines, was a full year and four months.

8 And David and his men went up and invaded the Gefhurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for thofe nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goeft to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.

9 And David fmote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the affes, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.

10 And Achifh faid, Whither have ye made a rode to day? And David faid, Against the fouth of Judah, and against the fouth of the Jerahmeelites, and against the fouth of the Kenites.

11 And David faved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, faying, Left they should tell on us, faying, So did David, and fo will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philiftines.

12 And Achith believed David, faying, He hath made his people Ifrael utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my fervant for ever.

CHAP. XXVIII. 3 Saul having destroyed the witches, 7 afterwards feeketh to one; 9 who being encouraged by him, raifeth up Samuel. *5 Sauls ruine forefbewed.

Saul confulteth with a witch.

Ahat the in those days,

that the Philiftines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Ifrael and Achish said unto David, Know thou affuredly, that thou fhalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.

2 And David faid to Achifh, Surely thou fhalt know what thy fervantcan do. And Achifh faid to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.

3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Ifrael had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city: and Saul had put away thofe that had familiar fpirits, and the wizards, out of

the land.

4 And the Philiftines gathered themfelves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Ifrael together, and they pitched in Gilboa.

5 And when Saul faw the hoft of the Philiftines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

7¶Then faid Saul unto his fervants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar fpirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his fervants faid to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar fpirit at En-dor.

8 And Saul difguifed himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he faid, I pray thee divine unto me by the familiar fpirit, and bring me him up whom I thall name unto thee.

9 And the woman faid unto him, Behold, thou knoweft what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off thofe that have familiar fpirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layeft thou a fnare for my life, to caufe me to die?

10 And Saul fware to her by the LORD, faying, As the LORD livech there fhall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.

11 Then faid the woman, Whom fhall I bring up unto thee? and he faid, Bring me up Samuel.

12 And when the woman faw Samuel, fhe cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, faying, Why haft thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.

13 And the king faid unto her, Benot afraid: for what faweft thou? And the

woman

Saul hearing of Chap. xxviii, xxix. woman faid unto Saul, I faw gods afcending out of the earth.

14 And he faid unto her, What form is he of? And fhe faid, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he ftooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.

15 And Samuel faid to Saul, Why haft thou difquieted me to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am fore diftreffed; for the Philiftines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and anfwereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayft make known junto me what I fhall do.

16 Then faid Samuel, Wherefore then doft thou ask of me, feeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

17 And the LORD hath done to him, as he fpake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David: 18 Because thou obeyedft not the voice of the LORD, nor executedft his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

19 Moreover, the LORD will alfo deliver Ifrael with thee, into the hand of the Philiftines: and to morrow fealt thou and thy fons be with me: the LORD alfo fhall deliver the hoft of Ifrael into the hand of the Philistines.

20 Then Saul fell ftraightway all a long on the earth, and was fore afraid, because of the words of Samuel, and there was no ftrength in him: for he had earen no bread all the day, nor all the night.

21 And the woman came unto Saul, and faw that he was fore troubled, and faid unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkned unto thy words which thou fpakeft un

to me.

22 Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou alfo unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me fer a morfel of bread before thee; and ear, that thou mayft have ftrength, when thou goeft on thy way.

23 But he refufed, and faid, I will not eat: but his fervants, toge her with the woman, compelled him, and he hearkned unto their voice: fo he arofe from the earth, and lat upon the bed.

his ruine, fainteth.

24 And the woman had a fat calf in the houfe, and she hafted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof.

25 And the brought it before Saul, and before his fervants, and they did eat: then they rofe up, and went away that night.

2 And the lords of the Philiftines paffed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rere-ward with Achifh.

3 Then faid the princes of the Philiftines, What do thefe Hebrews here? And Achifh faid unto the princes of the Philiftines, Is not this David the fervant of Saul the king of Ifrael, which hath been with me thefe days, or thefe years, and I have found no fault in him fince he fell unto me, unto this day?

4 And the princes of the Philiftines were wroth with him, and the princes of the Philiftines faid unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou haft appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, left in the battle he be an adverfary to us: for wherewith fhould he reconcile himself unto his mafter? bould it not be with the heads of thefe men?

5 Is not this David, of whom they fang one to another in dances, faying, Saul flew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

6 Then Achifh called David, and faid unto him, Surely as the LORD livech, thou hast been upright, and thy going out, and thy coming in with me in the hoft, is good in my fight: for I have not found evil in thee, fince the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless, the lords favour thee not.

Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou difplcafe not the lords of the Philiftines.

8 And David faid unto Achifl. But what have I done? and what haft thou found in thy fervant, fo long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"
