The duties of a Storekeeper, as defined by the Fire Department, are as follows:

The Storekeeper to receive from the Purchasing Agent, and any and all officials who may at any time purchase any property or material for this Department, all such property and material, and

to receipt to such purchasing official or officials for the same; to issue, upon proper requisitions, such material and stores to the various officials of this Department who are authorized to receive them, and to take the voucher of such officials for his various issues.

Answer the following questions in view of the above:

1. What do you consider the proper books to be kept and the proper form in which they are to be kept, by the Storekeeper in receipting for and issuing goods?

2. What do you consider to be the essential points of a requisition that it may be honored by the Storekeeper?

3. What evidence should you say would be necessary to enable you to determine whether an official was authorized to receive supplies?

4. From the duties, as above described, should you say that the Storekeeper had any discretion as to the amounts or quantities to be issued upon proper requisition?

5. Suppose a requisition were made, otherwise correct, calling for goods not in stock, or for more goods than were in stock; state, precisely, what you would do, and if your action required official communications by letter, give copies or specimens of such letters as you would write.

6. Write a letter of 150 words or more, to the President of the Fire Board, giving your views as to the desirable qualifications of a Storekeeper, and the best way in which to determine those qualifications by written examination.

N. B.- This letter must be signed by the number and not the name of the candidate.

2. Mrs. Snow, having $50, wished to purchase a dress. She bought 24 yards of silk, at $1 per yard; 1 yards of silesia, at 18 cents per yard; 5 yards of cambric, at 8 cents per yard; 2 spools of silk, at 12 cents each; 1 spool of twist for 5 cents; 14 dozen but

tons, at 42 cents per dozen; and 3 of a yard of velvet, at $2 per yard; she paid $15 for making the dress. How much money had she left?

3. How many pieces, each 0.17 in. long, can be cut from a wire 21.09 in. long; and how long will be the piece left over?

4. By selling goods for $45.60, a man lost 5%. What would he have gained, and how much per cent., if he had sold for $57?

5. I use 4 lamps, each burning 1/5 of a pint of oil per hour, and keep them burning for 4 hours each evening. On the evening of October 13, I began to supply them with oil from a 40-gallon cask full of oil. On what date will the cask be empty?

6. A man owns two houses worth $5,930, and $13,275, respectively. If the first rise in value 10%, and the second fall 3%, find the change per cent. in the value of his whole property.

7. A room is 23 feet long and 17 feet wide. Find the cost of carpeting the room with carpet at 75 cents per square yard, and whitening the ceiling at 6 cents per square yard.

8. Are there any errors in this account? If so, correct them.
