PREFACE.

Ar the time the following pieces were written, there was no intention of ever collecting them in the present form. Although, as anonymous productions, they have attracted much attention, the author deemed them of too fleeting a nature to be published from the house-tops of the press with his name. Various reasons, however, which it is unnecessary to mention, have overruled his original objections, and this little work is submitted to the reader in the hope that, as the fragments have been well received, they will not be entirely unacceptable now that they are gathered into a volume.
