the earthly; may we evermore bear the image of the heavenly. May the humility and benevolence, the devotion and zeal, the patience and submission, which adorned our Saviour's lovely character, be in a measure our attainment now: and pressing after a fuller conformity to Him, may we rejoice in the assurance that we shall be one day perfectly like Him, and see Him as He is.

Enable us to hold communion with Thee in all the dispensations of Thy Providence, and to display the true spirit of a Christian in all the varying events of life. As man is born to trouble, do Thou graciously regard us in all our sorrows. Though our afflictions are the effects and consequences of sin, we know that they are employed by Thy wisdom and goodness for our profit; and though no chastening seems for the present to be joyous, but grievous, nevertheless afterwards it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness. Be it unto us, O Lord, according to Thy Word. May we learn obedience by the things we suffer; and may every adversity turn to our salvation, through prayer and the supply of the spirit of Jesus Christ.

Though ignorant of the future, and not knowing what a day may bring forth, may we be fearful of nothing, and careful for nothing. May we

commit our way and our works to Him who has promised to be with us in time of trouble; who has assured us that He will never leave us, nor forsake us; whose grace will be sufficient for us while we live, and whose tender hand will wipe away all tears from our eyes when we die.

May we be more and more imbued with the tender and benevolent spirit of the Gospel. May it make us long earnestly for the salvation of souls, and rejoice in the belief that Jesus gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Already have the lines fallen to us in pleasant places. Blessed are our

eyes for they see, and our ears for they hear. May this blessing never be converted into a curse through our abuse of it; and may we ever fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into Thy rest, any of us should seem to come short of it.

We would now dismiss the cares of the world with the week. May we rise in the morning with refreshed bodies and renewed strength, and be in the spirit on the Lord's day. And do Thou send out Thy light and Thy truth, that they may lead us and guide us to Thy holy hill, and to Thy tabernacles.

Hear us, we beseech Thee, for His name's sake. Amen.

Our Father, etc.

SUNDAY MORNING.

HYMN.

To prayer, to prayer! for the morning breaks,
And earth in her Maker's smile awakes:
His light is on all below and above,-
The light of gladness, of life, and love.
Oh! then, on the breath of His morning air,
Send upward the incense of grateful prayer.

The voice of prayer in the world of bliss,
But purer, gladder than rose from this:
The ransomed shout to their glorious King,
While no sorrow shades their soul as they sing ;
But a sinless and joyous song they raise,
And their voice of prayer is eternal praise!

Awake! awake! and gird up thy strength
To join that holy band at length.

To Him who unceasing love displays,

Whom the powers of heaven unceasingly praise,
To Him our hearts and our lives be given,
For a life of prayer is a life of heaven!

THOU Son of man, who art Lord also of

the Sabbath, enable us this day to keep a Sabbath of spiritual rest. May we cease from our own works, and enter into Thy rest. Thou who didst invite weary and heavy-laden sinners to come unto Thee, enable us to obey Thy gra

cious voice.

We bless Thee in behalf of all Thy creatures; for the eyes of all look unto Thee, and Thou givest them their meat in due season. Above

all, we acknowledge the inestimable benefits bestowed upon mankind in Christ Jesus. We thank Thee for His miraculous birth, for His most holy life, His bitter agony and bloody death; for His glorious resurrection as on this day, His ascension into heaven, His triumph over all the powers of darkness, and His intercession at Thy right hand for evermore.

O how great was Thy love to the sinful sons of men, in giving Thine only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him might not perish, but have everlasting life. That love which has committed our souls to One so mighty to save, and which has chosen us to be sons and daughters of the Lord Almighty. That love which has set such a High Priest over Thy house and family to make intercession for us, and to send forth His angels to minister unto them who shall be heirs of salvation. O the riches of Thy grace, in sending the Holy Spirit to make us abound in hope, that we shall one day rise from the dead, and after our short labours here, rest with Thee in Thine eternal glory.

We pray Thee to speak the words of heavenly life to our souls this day; to take away the guilt of our sins, and shed abroad the pardoning love of God in all our hearts. May these words of our lips be the earnest desire and fervent request

of our hearts. May Thy Gospel prove to us this day the power of God unto salvation. May the word preached be mixed with faith, by the power of the Spirit, that it may sanctify our souls. Enable us to give diligent heed to the truths delivered unto us, lest we let them slip from our minds. Apply them in the demonstration of the Spirit to our hearts, with power, liveliness, and consolation. May deep convictions be fixed on our minds of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, the perfect purity of Thy righteous law, our own deplorable misery and wretchedness, and our constant need of Christ, in all His offices and relations, to save us sinners.

Holy Spirit, testify of Jesus to our hearts; show some token upon our souls for good this day. Open our understandings to understand the Scriptures. Give us to hunger and thirst after Christ, the Bread of life. Let Thy powerful influences command awe and reverence of soul before the Lord. Let us find that His banner over us is love; His grace in us is sweet; and His mercy surrounding us on every side is joyful. Without Thee we can do nothing. May Thy power enable us to worship Thee in spirit and in truth this day, that prayer may be our delight, and praise the joy of our souls.

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to confess Thy
