have mercy upon him, and multiply pardons. We humbly entreat, therefore, that Thou wilt be graciously pleased to stretch forth Thy powerful hand, and to loose the chains of sin wherewith we are tied and bound. Let it be Thy good pleasure to deliver us from every weight of sin, and from every yoke of bondage; that our souls may be fitted to serve Thee with that sincerity and gladness which Thou delightest to perceive in Thy people. O help us so to see and feel, so to hate and bewail, so to confess and forsake our sins, that we may have a well-grounded hope of Thy forgiveness, and a comfortable persuasion of our acceptance in the Son of Thy love.

Grant us, O loving Father, for His Name's sake, an increase of Thy grace, and such aids of Thy Holy Spirit, as may enable us to mortify our sins, and fit us for all the duties of Thy happy service. Make us to serve Thee sincerely, without hypocrisy; cheerfully, without dulness; universally, without partiality; and constantly, without weariness or falling away. Thou art never weary in doing us good; may we never be weary in doing Thee service. But as Thou hast pleasure in the prosperity of Thy servants, so let us have pleasure in the service of our Lord, and abound in Thy work and praise evermore. Do Thou fill up all that is wanting, re

form whatever is amiss in us, and perfect that which concerns us. Make us such, in our hearts and in our lives, that we may enjoy Thy peace in our souls now, and be made partakers of Thy glory hereafter. Be Thou pleased to grant us now the comfortable experience of Thy gracious acceptance of us, and of Thy merciful intentions towards us. O speak peace to our consciences, and say to each of our waiting souls, "I am thy salvation."

We desire, humbly and thankfully, to praise Thy Holy Name for Thy great loving-kindness to us during the past day, and throughout all the past days of our lives; and now earnestly pray that we may experience the continuance of Thy goodness to us, and of Thy Fatherly care over us, this coming night. Preserve and defend, bless and keep us, that no evil may befall any of us, nor any plague come nigh our dwelling. May balmy sleep and quiet rest refresh and strengthen us for Thy service, and for the performance of all our duties. And prepare us, O Lord, for our last sleep in death, and for our great account when we awake to judgment. Hear us, we beseech Thee, O Heavenly Father, through the riches of Thy grace, and the worthiness of Thy dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, etc.

THURSDAY MORNING.

HYMN.

Spirit Divine! attend our prayer,
And make this house Thy home;
Descend with all Thy gracious power,—
O come, great Spirit, come!

Come as the light! To us reveal

Our emptiness and woe;

And lead us in those paths of life
Where all the righteous go.

Come as the fire!-and purge our hearts

Like sacrificial flame;

Let our whole soul an offering be

To our Redeemer's name.

Come as the dew!-and sweetly bless

This consecrated hour;

May barren minds be taught to own
Thy fertilizing power.

MOST gracious and glorious God, who dwel

lest in heaven, but humblest Thyself to behold all things below, Thou who art infinite in goodness, and whose mercy endureth for ever, ordering and guiding all things by Thy surpassing wisdom; look down upon us, we beseech Thee, and hear our morning prayer. We cannot but

acknowledge Thee to be righteous in all Thy ways, and holy in all Thy works. Thou hast so done Thy marvellous acts, that they ought to be had in remembrance. Oh! that men would therefore praise Thee for Thy goodness, and declare the wonders that Thou doest for the children of men.

We confess, O our God, that we have erred and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep, and we sadly feel that there is no health in us. We acknowledge our transgressions, and our sins are ever before us. Spare Thou them, O God, who confess their faults, and mercifully look upon their infirmities, for the sake of Thy blessed Son.

Di

Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Thy Holy Spirit: create in us clean hearts, and renew right spirits within us. rect, sanctify, and govern our souls and lives in the ways of Thy laws, and in the works of Thy commandments. May we always remember the solemn vow, promise, and profession made for us at our baptism, and walk answerably to our Christian calling as the children of light. May we strive to mortify all our evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceed in all virtue and godliness of living.

Grant us, we beseech Thee, O Heavenly Father, all things which are requisite and necessary,

as well for the body as the soul. And leave us not destitute of Thy manifold gifts, nor yet of grace, to use them always to Thy honour and glory. Keep us, together with Thy whole Church, continually in Thy true religion, undisturbed by doubt, and preserved from unbelief. May the great Intercessor pray for us that our faith may not fail; and in all our dangers and necessities, may He stretch forth His right hand to help and defend us. Pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtues, and without which whosoever seems to live is dead in Thy sight.

And, O most merciful Father, who hast brought us safely to the beginning of this day, we render unto Thee most humble thanks for the great benefits we have received at Thy hands. We bless Thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for Thine inestimable love in the redemption of mankind by our Lord Jesus Christ: that we have been made joint heirs, through hope, of Thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of the most precious death and passion of Thy dear Son. May our thankfulness be such as shall appear in our lives, by an humble, holy, and obedient walking before Thee all our days.
