SUNDAY MORNING.

HYMN.

Blest day of God! most calm, most bright,—
The first and best of days;

The labourer's rest, the saint's delight,-
Sweet hour of joy and praise.

Daily, O Lord, Thy flocks are blest,
In pastures large and fair;
But sweetest is the Sabbath feast,
Provided by Thy care.

Welcome, kind Shepherd, to Thy sheep
Are these sweet tastes of love;
But what a Sabbath shall they keep,
When safe with Thee above!

Here, as we sing, and hear, and pray,
And all Thy footsteps trace,
We seem to tread the pleasant way
That leads us to Thy face.

OST merciful and gracious Father, our cove

MOST

nant God in Jesus Christ Thy Son, how excellent is Thy Name in all the world. Thou hast set up Thyself above the heavens, and Thy glory above all the earth. Thou art exalted far above all blessing and praise.

Although we cannot glorify Thee as do Thy holy angels, who excel in strength, yet we bless Thee that Thou art pleased to receive the wor

ship of us, Thy unworthy creatures; and graciously to declare, that whosoever offereth Thee praise, he glorifieth Thee. We desire, therefore, to adore Thy Holy Name, according to the ability with which Thou hast blessed us, and to pour out before Thee this morning the voice of joy and thanksgiving.

We thank Thee, Almighty Father, that the day-spring from on high has again visited us, and that the light of dawned upon our souls. hast made for man, no

another Sabbath has This is the day Thou less than for Thyself:

we will rejoice and be glad in it.

How many Prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which we see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which we hear, and have not heard them.

Forgive, we beseech Thee, all our past abuse of Thy mercies; and teach us in future more diligently to improve them. Especially grant that we may have grace to serve Thee acceptably this day, and worship and obey Thee as we ought to do. Give us that preparation of heart which comes only from Thee, and without which all our services will be nothing worth.

Pour out a Sabbath spirit upon the people of this land, and teach them to prize these precious days of the Son of Man. Deliver them from

the many abounding temptations to profane their sacred hours, by yielding to the seductions of worldly amusement, and seeking enjoyment in the society of those who are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.

Dispose us to love the habitation of Thy house, and the place where Thine honour dwelleth; to approach Thy gates with thanksgiving, and enter Thy courts with praise; to give thanks unto Thee, and speak good of Thy Name. Sow in all our hearts the seed of eternal life, that whatsoever in Thy Holy Word we shall profitably learn, we may indeed fulfil the same. May we improve not only the ordinances of Thy house, but every other advantage of this sacred day to the purpose for which Thou hast ordained

it.

Help us to examine our hearts and consciences, to consider our ways and works, to search Thy Scriptures, to meditate on Thy love, to talk of all Thy wondrous doings, to seek Thy face, and prepare ourselves for Thy kingdom.

Pour down, we beseech Thee, this day, upon all who profess and call themselves Christians, the abundance of Thy mercy. Bless especially such as shall assemble with us for worship in the courts of Thy sanctuary. May it please Thee to give them increase of grace, to hear

meekly Thy word, and to receive it with pure affection, and to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit.

And since Thou hast promised to be with Thy ministering servants always, even unto the end of the world, we pray Thee to endue plenteously with heavenly gifts such as shall stand up in Thy Name this day to declare Thy counsel. May they preach with all earnestness and with power from on high, as those who stand between the living and the dead, and watch for souls as they that must give account.

And mercifully grant, that as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither until they have watered the earth, and made it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater ; so may Thy Word be which shall go forth out of their mouths. Let it not return to Thee void, but accomplish that which Thou pleasest, and prosper in the thing whereunto Thou sendest it; so that neither they who preach nor they who hear may preach or hear in vain.

We ask these things, O Lord, and all other needful blessings, in the only Name and for the only sake of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate.

Our Father, etc.

SUNDAY EVENING.

HYMN.

Sun of my soul, Thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if Thou be near;
O may no earth-born cloud arise,
To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyes.
When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought,-How sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.

Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

Come near and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take,
Till in the ocean of Thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

LORD God Almighty, who humblest Thyself to listen to the adoration of the heavenly hosts, we praise Thee for Thy greater condescension in regarding the feeble supplications and prayers of sinful mortals like ourselves. We perceive that Thy ways are not as our ways, neither are Thy thoughts as our thoughts. Thou hast of Thy goodness made known to us the mysteries of Thy grace. Thou hast revealed Thyself as delighting in mercy, and as being glorified in the salvation of sinners, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Enable us to take shelter in this Thine
