everlasting to everlasting Thou art God. And we rejoice to know, that when these monuments of Thy power shall be dissolved; when the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old, like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner, Thy salvation shall be for ever, and Thy righteousness shall not be abolished.

Blessed be Thy name for the priceless gift of Thy dear Son, Jesus Christ, in whom Thy perfections are pledged for the happiness of Thy people. Teach us to believe in Him; help us to abide in Him. Satisfied that this world cannot be our portion, may we confess Thee in Him to be our God; may we take Thee to be our Ruler, our Guardian, and our Guide; and though other lords may have had dominion over us, by Thee henceforward may we make mention of Thy name.

We lament, O Lord, that so much of our precious time and thoughts should have been alienated from Thee, or but partially devoted to Thee. But do Thou, to whom all power belongs, accept the entire surrender we now make of ourselves to Thee, and manifest the exceeding riches of Thy grace, by making us Thy workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Let the commencement of this year be marked by

new communications from above of Thy Holy Spirit, and by the formation within us cf clearer views, purer desires, and higher aims than we have heretofore experienced. Let the new year be a new epoch in our spiritual history. Instead of wasting the solemn season in thoughtless levity, may we employ it as the occasion of more serious reflection on the shortness, the uncertainty, and the value of time. May we direct our thoughts to an eternal world, and apply ourselves, with greater earnestness and sincerity than ever, to preparation for the solemn changes that await us. While we enjoy Thy goodness, and allow our affections to expand to those who are united to us by the ties of nature or of friendship, may our hearts not be overcharged with the cares, the pleasures, and the attachments of this life. As we advance in years, may we grow in grace; and as the last year and day of life approach, may we be progressively attaining to that state in which, with loins girded, and lamps burning, we shall be ready to go forth to meet the Bridegroom at His coming.

We know not what may be in reserve for us in the course of the year on which we have just entered. But we wait for Thy salvation, and our hope is in Thy Word. To Thee we entrust all our interests for time and for eternity. Into

Thy hand we commit our spirits; for Thou hast redeemed us, O Lord God of truth. Fit us for the duties and trials to which we may be called. And whether it be Thy will to call us hence this year, or to prolong our lives beyond it, may we be equally prepared for Thy will, stedfast and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.

We pray Thee to enrich the several members of our family with the bounties of Thy providence, and the gifts of Thy grace. May the interests of Thy Church prosper; and may a new impulse be given this year to the cause of truth. May its friends exhibit fresh zeal in its behalf; and may their exertions and prayers be crowned with unwonted success.

And now, Lord, we leave Thy throne, trusting in Thy mercy, praising Thee for past goodness, and supplicating the continued aid of Thy Holy Spirit. And we ask all for His only name's sake. Amen.

Our Father, etc.

NEW YEAR'S DAY-EVENING.

HYMN.

Our helper, God! we bless Thy name;
Whose power and grace are still the same:
The tokens of Thy kindly care

Commence, and close, and crown the year.

Amid ten thousand snares, we stand
Supported by Thy guardian hand;
And mark, when we regard Thy ways,
Ten thousand monuments of praise!

Thus far Thine arm has led us on;
Thus far we make Thy mercy known;
And while we tread this desert land,
New mercies shall new songs demand.

Our grateful souls on Jordan's shore
Would raise one sacred pillar more;
Then 'grave, in brighter courts above,
Inscriptions of immortal love.

OST gracious God, our heavenly Father, whose goodness endureth yet daily, Thou art nigh unto all them that call upon Thee in truth. Thou wilt fulfil the desire of them that fear Thee; Thou wilt also hear their cry, and wilt save them. In full dependence on these Thy faithful promises, we now call upon Thee for help and grace in all the duties of that year on which we have entered this day. May we have a full blessing upon all its various events. May we be forgiven, through the blood of Jesus,

all our past sinfulness and unfaithfulness. May we be enabled to believe in Him with our hearts, and thankfully receive His atonement: and being justified by faith, may we have peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

According to Thine own command, we would come before Thee, first of all, with supplications, prayers, and intercessions, and giving of thanks for all men. Look down, we implore Thee, in tender mercy upon all our dear children, relatives, and friends. Where they already know and love Thee, increase, confirm, and strengthen their faith and love. Where they are yet unchanged and unrenewed, may this prove an acceptable year for their true conversion. Regard with Thy gracious favour the beloved Queen of these realms, and all the royal family. Comfort them in all their sorrows with true consolation ; preserve them from their peculiar spiritual dangers and temptations; and make them large and increasing blessings to our Church and our country. Guide all in the adminstration of public affairs to such measures as will promote Thy glory, and the true welfare of this great nation.

Behold us, O Lord, in tender pity, and spare us, as a nation, though we deserve Thy wrath. Let not the rich amongst us trust in their riches,
