early Church, be granted in our day to all Thy Churches in every land, that all men may be lieve that Thou hast sent Jesus, Thy Son, to be the Saviour of the world.

Let Thy blessed Spirit accompany us this day when we enter Thy courts, and whoever may plant or water, do Thou give the increase. Manifest Thyself, blessed Jesus, to Thy people in the breaking of bread, wherever they meet this day to commemorate Thy death. Sanctify us and our services, and beautify the meek with salvation. Give us joy and peace in believing, and cause us to rejoice in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost. May all the lovely fruits of the Spirit adorn the heart of each believer,—even love, joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, meekness, longsuffering, faith, and temperance,—to the glory of Thy name, and the conversion to Thee of innumerable precious souls. And thus, with the bright beams of Thy light and truth shining gloriously around us, may we be brought safely at length to Thy heavenly kingdom, for Thine only name's sake. Amen.

HYMN.

Thou whose almighty word
Chaos and darkness heard,
And took their flight!
Hear us, we humbly pray,
And where the Gospel-day
Sheds not its glorious ray,
Let there be light!

Thou who didst come to bring,
On Thy redeeming wing,

Healing and sight—
Health to the sick in mind,
Sight to the inly blind;
Oh! now to all mankind
Let there be light!

Spirit of truth and love,
Life-giving Holy Dove,

Speed forth Thy flight!
Move o'er the water's face,
Bearing the lamp of grace,
And in earth's darkest place
Let there be light!

LORD our God, by whose Spirit the whole

Church is governed and sanctified, and who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of Thy Son Jesus Christ, mercifully grant us such a measure of Thy grace that we may walk worthy of our

vocation, and please Thee both in will and deed. Give us the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge, of faith, of love, and of a sound mind, and let all the fruits of the Spirit be produced in our lives. Do Thou rule in our hearts and direct our paths. Mortify all our evil and corrupt affections, and let every thing belonging to the Spirit live and grow in us. Thus make us an holy habitation for Thyself, and keep us from grieving that Holy Spirit, whereby we are sealed unto the day of redemption.

We thank Thee, O our ascended Lord and Saviour, that, having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, Thou didst so wondrously, as on this day, fill Thy disciples with the blessed gift, baptizing them with the Holy Ghost, and enabling them to go forth as the ambassadors of reconciliation to the revolted nations of mankind. We thank Thee that thus at length the glad tidings of great joy were published on our shores, and we, Gentiles of the British Isles, were grafted into Thy Church, and became partakers of the heavenly gift. O how great are our privileges, that Thou shouldest thus bring us near to Thyself, that we might receive the adoption of sons, and with that adoption the Spirit of Thy Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father. And yet further, that Thou hast promised that if we be

children, then are we heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, suffering with Him here that we may be also glorified together. All thanksgiving and praise be unto Thee for these Thy unspeakable mercies.

Suffer us not, O merciful Father, to receive this grace in vain. Now, in this accepted time and day of salvation, do Thou work in us to will and to do of Thy good pleasure, that we may work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. May we daily increase in Thy manifold gifts of grace, and may it please Thee that out of Thy Son's fulness all we should abundantly receive. As the Spirit of the Lord rested without measure upon Him, so may it be imparted in measure to every one of us,—the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord, that we may be also of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord. Give unto us especially the spirit of prayer, so that we may find the Spirit helping our infirmities, and enabling us daily to pray in the Holy Ghost. Thus strengthened with might by Thy Spirit in the inner man, may we be valiant for the truth; may we be bold in our God to proclaim His Gospel; and may we have that wisdom which comes from above, which is first pure,

then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and of good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

And as we pray for the grace and guidance of the Spirit, we also pray for His consolations under the trials of the soul and the afflictions of the body. Deliver us from spiritual trials, that we may not be overcome and led captive, and sanctify all our temporal sorrows to our spiritual good. Comfort and relieve us according to our several necessities, strengthen us in every conflict, support us under every trial, carry us through every temptation, give us patience under all the sufferings of this mortal state, and grant that our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found.

May Thy grace and goodness be always with us, whether it be in sickness or in health, in the day time or in the night season; and when days and nights are ended, may we dwell with Thee in everlasting day, through the only merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, etc.
