Mr. Johnson introduced

House Bill No. 487, entitled

A bill to authorize the county commissioner of schools in counties having a population of five hundred thousand or over to recommend the teachers necessary for the several school districts of the county employing less than six teachers, to appoint a deputy commissioner of schools, to appoint one or more supervisors of education, and other assistants, to prescribe their duties, and to authorize the county board of supervisors to fix the salaries of said deputy, supervisors and assistants.

The bill was read a first and second time by its title and referred to the Committee on Education.

The Committee on Education, by Mr. Sink, Chairman, reported
House Bill No. 343 (file No. 274)—

A bill to amend Act No. 147, Public Acts of 1891-to provide for the election of county boards of education and the appointment of superintendents of schools thereby.

The committee recommended that the accompanying substitute be adopted and that the bill then pass.

The following is the title of the proposed substitute:

A bill to provide for the election of a County Board of Education, for the appointment of a County Superintendent of schools, for the appointment of a deputy County Superintendent of schools and one or more Supervisors of Education, for the hiring of help for the office of the County Superintendent of schools, for the appointment of school examiners, for the consideration and jurisdiction of the Budget of County Board of Education by Board of Supervisors, and to define the duties and fix the compensation of officers employed by said County Board of Education, and to repeal section 12 of this act and all existing acts or parts of acts conflicting with the provisions of this act.

The question being on the adoption of the proposed substitute,

The substitute was adopted.

The bill, as substituted, was ordered printed, referred to the Committee of the Whole and placed on the general orders.
